Necessary? ... Probably not.

How much weight? ... Not enough to stress about.


As Matt stated, scuff the wraps up first. Epoxy takes several days to cure and during that cure period you can recoat without scuffing. After it has set, scuffing is necessary to get the top coat to adhere well to the first coat.
