That isn't a Robert's Wrap...the one guide offset the others is the give away. There are several different methods to spiral wrapping and the Roberts Wrap is just one of them...and my preferred method.

Advantages to spiral wrapping in my opinion…

1. Eliminate torque on the blank. With the guides on the bottom the pressure from the fish does not want to twist the blank.
2. Fewer guides. Since you don’t need to worry about line scrub when the guides are on the under side of the blank you don’t need to use unnecessary guides just to keep the line from scrubbing the blank while flexed.
3. Lighter guides. With the line under the rod you can start using single foot guides much sooner. That’s a pretty good weight reduction in both the guide itself but also the thread and finish.

...a couple of photos...one of what a big fish does to a conventionally wrapped rod and one of two identical rods, one spiral wrapped and one conventional wrapped. Weight is hung from the tip by line running thru the guides and attached to the seat. Look what the conventionally wrapped rod wants to do...

Many will argue that the torque forces that exist are small and not worth the worry. I believe that if there is something that you can do about it, why not? In my opinion, that's what custom rods are all about...making those slight changes that add just a little more to the rod. And by the time you've made 5 of those changes collectively you've made an appreciable impact.
