i can't imagine it being a fly rod w/ a .900 base. Probably about 2" overlap where the two pieces telescope together to account for 92" combined length you measured.

you shouldn't have to do anything special with the telescopic section. Add your grips and real seat to the lower portion and guides to the main part. Just extend the rod so that two pieces are tight when in use. This is a pretty common feature in bass/musky rods that are 7'6" or longer.
