I've had better success with steel leader, compared to copper wire. It doesn't turn green, can be soft or hard, (depending on pound-test and braided versus solid) and is relatively easy to get.

Otherwise, go to Home Depot and check out their bulk stuff until you find what you want. Best wishes.
