Forum Posting/Replying Etiquette?

I'm getting burned out with forum posts requesting product or info which I respond to publicly or by PM and never get a reply. I wonder if my offer of solution is a good or bad idea and why? Am I expecting too much? - any opinions would be appreciated.

Not to respond , either positive or also negative , is just not polite , though someone might simply forget ?

Re: Forum Posting/Replying Etiquette?

Sometimes a thank you (especially to PM's), would be nice, but if this is not forthcoming, it's (to me) a good indication, they are only interested in their own gain, and there is a sucker born every minute - If they did reply, they may be afraid you will want some information in return. I call them 'Black Holes', heaps of information in, none out. There is a guy who posts pictures, on a lot of different forum, breezes in and out, showing off his latest color scheme, BUT NEVER, NEVER answers, PM or Posts - egocentric , I suppose you would call it - saying all this, 'Black Claw' certainly comes up with some excellent techniques/colors.pete

Good lack! When someone takes the time to type out a response to your question, at least have the common courtesy to say, "thanks!"

A simple 'thanks' still goes a long way. Words to the wise, as they say.

I feel the exact same way as you guys do. All too often you will get a PM from a member wanting something. You go out of your way to reply a bunch of info or send a picture, or even give prices only to never even get a 'no thanks' in return, or to find out they only want a half-dozen pieces which isn't enough to melt lead over. Really jerks my chain. I have several earmarked on here that fall into that class. Sorry if you are reading this, you know who you are, but you earned it.

In the meantime I will continue helping where I can and maintaining silence where necessary.

Whew, that felt good!!!

Re: Forum Posting/Replying Etiquette?

Oh yes, I just remembered this one. It's my personal favorite.

I get a pm or email or some-such where someone will ask one question, but it soon turns into a million questions. Question after question. Goes something like this:
How do you do this, and how did you do that? What about that, and what if this happens? What do you recommend about this, and EXACTLY how should I do that? Could you give me a little more info on this, and could you spell out all the steps for that? Ad infinitum...

OK, sounds like a real newbie in need of some guidance. So, wanting to help the lad along, I spell out the details. (A little aside: Remember that assignment you had in grade school, where you had to spell-out all the steps to make a PBJ sandwich-- and you realized it takes two full pages of explanation, starting with, "First, open the fridge..."? Well, that's the sort of exhaustively drawn-out, detailed explanation I'm talking about here.)

After spelling out EVERY last little detail, I don't hear back from our 'author of a million questions'. Hmmmm... what gives? So, after a couple weeks go by, I send off an email/pm/whatever inquiring about our newbie's success with the much-discussed technique. And surprisingly often, this is what I would get:

Quote:
Oh hey, thanks for your help. I just decided to do it my own way."
Whaaaaaaaaaaa??? Well heck, I coulda given him that advice in the first place! Unless you've been through that mill a few times, you may fail to understand the wisdom behind the reply,
"Give it a try, and then let me know if you have any questions. "

Re: Forum Posting/Replying Etiquette?

Know I am thinking you guys are like me. Lets say if you go into a gas station and buy a soda. You tell the clerk thank you or have a nice day thoes simple words go a long way. You have to rember some people don't have any manners in this day and age. I am 32 years old and when I was little my father made me say please and thank you. Now I am doing it to my kids. If you look at some people these days it about brakes them to say sorry or thank you. Then the best thing I hear is its their job or its their fault. Somtimes I am a little busy to resond quickly to PM's but I always try and get back to them eaither way. I have people here on TU that I will help any day of the week and some forget about it. Just rember you are on the high road when you help others that what makes you a better person.

KBC - "Just rember you are on the high road when you help others that what makes you a better person."
That sounds very Buddhist, I'll go along with that. pete
