What is this world coming to?

when a member has to preface a question with "I Did A Search". I think we are discouraging questions by constantly answering questions with "Do A Search".....

Re: What is this world coming to?

The problem is that the answers to so may of these questions have been answered many, many, times. Often in great detail with exactly how to approach the problem. I won't discourage anyone from asking a question, just don't typically answer the question when it is so easy to find the answer. One of the first things I do when I see these questions is go do a search and am always surprised how quickly it pops up. Best part is you end up finding additional great information. I also find many of the questions would be best by doing not asking, you don't have to build a complete bait to get your answer.

I understand in this day an age most want it now and don't have the "time" to search and read. Perhaps the use of basic search functions wasn't covered well enough in school. But for me reading, searching, etc.. is important and if a guy isn't willing to do it, I am not all that inclined to help him out. Also it sometimes comes off as the poster believes their time is so important they can't waste it searching, however others time is of no importance so answer the question.

Re: What is this world coming to?

If it was me you were talking about,i didnt do it because i am lazy.Far from it.....
I dont have the TIME to search thru a thousand posts for the exact bit of info i need.
I ask a question if people dont want to answer, thats their choice.

Re: What is this world coming to?

Some newbies may not know how to or when to do a search. There is a ton of info here for the taking. You just have to look for it. On the other hand, I can see jiggers point also. I believe that some of the users have a bit more time than others.(retired) Sometimes that means they are busier. Many of the users have only a limited time to be online and searching for answers. I have asked questions that have already been answered but I didn,t take the time to search it out first. If we were honest, haven't most of us asked a question that has already been answered at one time or another. If we only asked ones that we were sure that haven't been answered, this could become a mighty boring site.

Re: What is this world coming to?

I also understand how frustrating it can be to do searchs. After about a year on here I have finally learned most of the fishing terminology. But the problem is that people in Ohio might call one bait something(because that manufacter is hot here) and someone in california might call it something else. But I look at it like this, like school there is no stupid questions, but hopefully they have done some homework, and everyone has to start out somewhere. So if people want to step up and be the teacher or a tutor why not encourage it, because sometimes the teacher may gain more insight through these new minds.

Re: What is this world coming to?

when i first started pouring stick baits i was getting a hollow end in the bait. i was going to ask but did the search and found the answer. so the search works to answer a lot of the questions.

Re: What is this world coming to?

The search option has worked great for me, but at the same time, I've asked questions I know are here somewhere but just don't have the time to look them up. This place is sooo full of knowledge and info that it can be very time consuming and overwhelming looking through all of it for one answer. Its nice to be able to jump in, post a question, and jump out. It only takes a minute or so. The best part is, when someone answers, it pops up in my email which only takes a few minutes to check also. Sometimes, if I'm quick and stealthy, I can even do it at work..lol. Its available time that dictates whether I use the search option or not, but I have to say I'm guilty of posting the "same ol' questions" once or twice....lol...

Re: What is this world coming to?

Yes some people may ask the question over and over. Now what would we have to talk about then or maybe a new way of doing somthing might get thrown in. You also have to relize we have to pay now so by us I mean everybody if new people ask a stupid question in our eyes we should give them an answer. If we just say do a search they might get mad and not want to join because nobody will answer anything for them. So what would be the point for them to join.

Re: What is this world coming to?

We have to accept that it does take new members a while to get into the swing of things. Personally, this was the first web forum that I had ever used and it did take me some time. King, I totally agree with your arguements.

Long time members know how to access the required information very easily, from knowledge of the posts and experience with the search function. It only takes a couple of minutes to do a quick search and post a link or two, along with a list of the search words used. This way, the new member gets his/her information and a quick lesson in how the information is accessed. It is not enough to simply refer the member to the search function.

There is nothing wrong with airing the common subjects again and again. The general example in these cases is D2T. Despite all the whining about the regularity of its discussion, new information does frequently emerge, for example, the discussion on water resistance and the very current discussion on hardness.

This site should promote its reputation for being helpful. If a member does not wish to do the answer search, just move onto the next post, someone will do it.

Re: What is this world coming to?

Vodkaman is right this site does have a reputation for being helpful. The last forum that I used linked me here just for that reason and now I only use this site. It seems that other boards has become a bragging board more than a helpful hand to those who need or ask for help. The one thing that I cant stand is the find out for yourself attitudes that sometimes show themselves instead of helping someone. If someone gets tired of an epoxy question just dont read it or click to a different post, its that simple. The simple questions that we who has done this for years may be rocket science for who just started and sometimes need reassured that they are doing the right thing. Just remember its not only adults who use this site but kids as well.
