year of the locusts (cicada)

I recently read my March Bassmaster's magazine where it pointed out that this year is the year of the 17 yr. cicadas. I remember the last time these pests hatched and how difficult fishing became. I'm wondering if anybody has any surefire lures, techniques, or tips when these suckers hatch because typical bass lures don't seem to work well. I know about the locust look-a-likes from arbogast and others, I was looking for some other possibilities?

Soupy,

Insect lures are sure to be a hit with fishermen this year.
I found a post from Baits by Bates where he posted this pic:

That photo was posted way before the arbogast collection was released.

The wings appear to be printed on transparency film with button holes fashioned to fit on the body sides premoulded buttons.

I've seen wings crafted by Vladimir Markov that are made from epoxy and feather veins that are insanely detailed! The dragonfly wings look like they were cast overtop a piece of romain lettuce as a mold.

I've got a 3" jungle wasp I've been workin on as well. I'm planning a leg set that attaches to the bottom with legs curled up and folded back. The 1st generation prototype seen here needs alot of work. I'm waiting on a large shipment of rtv and plastics that's taking longer than expected.

Jerry, Thats a little baddass bug. How big is it?

Inch & a half, body only. The wings will lengthen it a little bit.
its about the actual size of a mature cicada. but fatter

this bait's mold is a lil different than my others, the part line runs horizontally instead of vertically like most baits.

Those are both neat looking lures. Maybe a guy could hit you up later in the year for a handful of finished ones? This summer is going to be rough, supposed to be the biggest hatch ever and the trees around here are loaded with eggs! Maybe it'll make small topwaters a staple in the ol' arsenal.

Yup, I'm thinkin many bass will learn to look at the surface for strugglers if they're as many as you mentioned in your area. seems like an easy meal to me. Small poppers might work well.

If I have any done when you need em, theyre yours.
