Fishing deep grass??????

I have a local man made canal that is about 20-25ft deep but on the bottom there is about 3-6ft of hydrila grass growing up from the bottom. What baits and fishing methods would you recomend for this situation.

Our local river is loaded with hydrilla this time of year, and I like to use suspending jerkbaits and weighted flukes. If you want to really get down in that mess, try a weedless jig with a craw trailer or rig a weedless senko just like a split or dropshot rig, but without the weight. These methods have all worked pretty well for me.

20 feet is actually very deep for our river, but I do sometimes fish flukes in deeper water on lakes in our area. I like to use Mustad's weighted hooks (1/32 or 1/16 ounce).
Also forgot to mention that you can be a little more brave in hydrilla or grass than what some might think. It's not nearly as easy to get hung up in those than it is in brush or rockpiles. I have actually fished hydrilla with a wacky rigged senko. Even with the barb exposed, I don't lose many baits. Of course, I make my own so I don't really think much about it. I guess if I were paying 6 bucks a pack for Yamamoto's, I'd probably stay away from hydrilla.

What about yo-yoing a rat-l-trap... It's one of my favorite techniques for catching fish in deep water hydrilla. Let it fall to the top of the hydrilla and then rip it free, then let it fall back down. Rip, Fall, repeat...

Senkos

What is it with senkos these days where i fish so many guys in bass boats come by fishing tournaments, and you can guess what they use. You got it senkos. The fish wont even look at one. This bait is getting fished out real fast in my neck of the woods.

Re: Fishing deep grass??????

i guess it would depend on the water temp. , how active the fish are,and where the fish are holding in relation to the hydrilla (top,middle,bottom..ext) .. i might try swimming a jig over the top and just below or craw a 12" culprit - texas rigged as light as possible (pegged) ,and fished as slow as possible without stopping the worm..or try hopping a weedless jig with a twin tail grub as a trailor slowly (a lot of action at a slow pace) if that dosent work try a ham sandwich and a budlight..it brings'um to the boat everytime...
