The only place I ever wore out a 3x watermellon crawfish was on the Rum River. Fished in cutbacks, laydowns, and holes on a fairly heavy drop shot, 8 lb line, and spinning gear.
Chris, I absolutely love small river and creek fishing. I use three baits....3" Senko, 3.5" Beaver and a 2.75" Tube. RoadKill Camo is excellent for the smallies.
I like to fish the Mississippi and Illinois rivers here a few times a year. I usually fish a Juvenile Diabeties tournament on the rivers in August. Four baits that I always fish are a Bomber fat A 4F in oxbow brim, A Baby Brush Hog Watermelon candy, A Gene Larues Black Neon silver pincer craw, and a Bandit Taco Salad crankbait. I know the Watermelon Candy seems out of place but it's gotten me two seventh place finishes on those rivers. Other than that it's mostly lakes for me. There's some good small rivers in Missouri but I never take the time to go there. Some day I will fish the Meramac and Gasconade rivers, suppose to be some fun small mouth fishing there nothing big but lots of them.
alsworms I have been having a little luck over here in Bakersfield fishing a dropshot rig in the Killer Kern River. The current is real fast right now and it is just about impossible to fish. The only thing that i have been catching them on is dropshoting 3inch strait worms and 5inch roboworms. Oh yeah i also had some nice bites on megabait pencil shad (soft jerk bait).
Hey up here in michigan river fishing is a great way to spend a day. My favorite way is to actually go out first thing in the morning and catch hellgrammites in the rapids and then use them for bait. It is not uncommon to sit in 1 or 2 and catch 30 bass. Other wise inline spinnerbaits are always a fun fast way to cover lots of water but i do it in a float tube im to lazy to walk. :P
if the fish swallows the hook, push the eye of the hook down to one side of its mouth, the hook is now upside down(relatively). then grab the eyelet through the gill plate, push the hook back out of its mouth. little damage is done when you do this properly
shenandoah smallmouth- crankbaits, tubes , brush jigs,ext... last year (early december), i caught 3 smallies between 3 1/2- 4 lbs within a 50yrd stretch, casting a 1/2 oz booyah brushjig (nat.craw)with a zoom superhog trailor(watermen redflake) to laydowns and stumps in 12 to 15 ft. of water ....it was the best 20 min. of my life

In the rivers down here in Texas that I fish in, the fish mainly feed on crawfish so anything that resembles a crawfish in color and movement you should catch em. I mainly throw finesse jigs but I do use some bigger jigs if Im going for bigger fish. I also throw alot of zoom and roboworm finesse worms in natural colors.
Here in Cincy we have the greatest non-fishery of all....the Ohio. Do'nt you feel sorry for us?? No, its not that bad....OK I lied. We have a lot of pressure on very little water so downsizing is a must. 4" worms, 1/8 oz. jigs and small cranks usually trick a few. The river used to be an excellent fishery 20 yrs. ago with lots of 2-4 lb. fish. Now it takes 8-9 lbs. to win a tourny with a 5 or 6 fish limit. Looks like I've got the wrong hobby to live here.
