About 20 years ago, when I was a university student, I fished at a small river in the western part of Japan. The river bass was very good fighters and totally different from bass in the lakes and the ponds.
I first used baby torpedo to check the condition and if it was slow, I used swimming worm method.
But my lunker killer was "Pencil Popper" by Daiwa, which was a downsized pencil popper used in the offshore fishing for GT. It floats horizontaly on the water and a good immitation for the minnow.
I fish the CT River and no matter what I fish for, it is great. My wife and I have caught some very nice fish from this fishery. The only problem fishing on a river is the boat traffic. The big boats have no consideration for us who own a bass boat, but otherwise, the fishing is great!! Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, and senko worms are the best.
Kankakee and Illinois river for me in Illinois. At times great smallmouth and a very respectable largemouth bass population.Found a good walleye spot back in November.
Illinois river is a good white bass and sauger fishery but a lot of barge traffic.
Even though i own a boat small enough for these rivers, still like to soak my feet in the Kankakee.
You betcha!
I myself fish the Big D (the delaware). I'm lucky enough to live 5 minutes from the outstanding fishing the river has to offer. Years ago there were serious problems with polloution and what not, however thanks to some conservation the Big D is one of the prettiest, cleanest rivers around. The smallie fishing is outstanding!!! It's not rare to boat 30 a day in early spring, and while the numbers decline slightly in the summer, seeminly the size increases (couldn't tell you why). This past year I boated one 19, several 18's, and countless 17's. The year before I was blessed with a 21 incher in late fall. The walleye, musky, and striper fishing is also top notch.
I'd like to mention that as I write this, outside my window, snow falls. How depressing.
Though we're not too far from the warmer months, and as they approach my excitement grows, (my girlfriend's ear can attest to that.)
