Big Worms

Hi, I've kinda been thinking of starting to fish big worms(10"-16"). So I was wondering if anyone has any recomendations on how to fish them or what worms to use, straight tail ribbon tail doesn't matter. One idea I had was using those optimum snakes and slow rolling them on top near heavy cover. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Norcalbassin

Re: Big Worms

Ah goin big! I love the big stuff man!

Not much can beat Bass Pro Shops selection of huge worms. Cheap, good colors, consistent. Shape and action isn't as important with big worms. You aren't trying to tease the fish to eat like you do with a drop shot rig, you are trying to present a big meal to a fish. For big worms, brands and all that isn't really important, just find a big worm with good color selection.

I really like a purple worm, DARK purple with a little flake. Green Pumpkin is a great color, but by far solid Black is the best producer for me over here in the west. You are going to want to go with a REALLY big hook for these baits, try 3/0-7/0. No need to be subtle! Also, go big with the weights. 1/2 oz would really be a minimum weight. I like to use a big 1 oz sinker for nearly all situations. I can get a far cast to catch the skittish giants and I can hold bottom well.

Rigging is all up to you. I like carolina rigs the most because I can cover water pretty well and because bigger worms look better when they glide above. If you have a fish follow your bait, but not eat it, try using a Texas rig and use lots of tiny hops. NOW you would try and tease em into eating.

Don't try the Optimum swimbaits, they are a joke. If you want to try swimbaits, try some California Swimbabes or Mattlures. A flipping stick can handle these baits easily and they will get good bites!

Hope that cleared up your question. Now is the best time to try big wormin!

Re: Big Worms

I caught my personal best night fishing with one of these 14" worms:

I like green pumpkin with chartreuse tail. I fished it carolina rig with a 3/4 ounce weight. I got slammed. It's not uncommon for me to use a 1 oz weight on these, either.

I prefer larger 10" and 14" worms on a carolina rig for night fishing, but not sure I have the confidence to throw them during the day. Carolina Rig is the only way I like to fish them with about a 3 foot leader and a 5/0 hook.

When I work the bait, I just give the rod big lifts so the bait raises way off the ground.

Re: Big Worms

Thanks for the advice everyone, sounds like a carolina rig is the way to go. Metalhead I didn't mean optimum swimbaits because they are a joke, Optimum also makes a bunch of huge worms and lizards and thats what I was talking about.
Thanks,

Re: Big Worms

I second the black worm,I mainly use V&M.I have found that here in North Alabama our spotted bass like the big worms at night as well as largemouth.Won a tourny a couple years back on them. All spots on the big worm, had one to break my rod in half,he won lunker also.Back then I thought that was something to break my Allstar(yea right)until Istarted using good rods.Good luck.

Ditto!
I love fishing the powerbait 10" in any greenish color with a 1/8 oz bullet weight. When you get bit you know it, bass annihilate it.
