Plan to fish surface – drag nymphs – attractors?
Visit or call a local fly store – find out what the fish are after at the places you plan to fish.
Check out the fly selections in fishing catalogs for ideas for flies. You can surf the web for sites that offer the “how to” tie certain patterns.

A simple pattern to tie that will catch just about anything is a thread ant. Use a size#14 hook; make a rear ball out of thread followed by two turns of hackle and a front ball of thread. Simple to make and catches fish!

As was stated go to Fly Anglers OnLine, Your Complete Internet Flyfishing Resource. on the left hand side of the screen click on fly tying and take the online tying course for beginners. Everything is step by step and they all catch fish.

A: I only tie my own, because B: store bought blow apart.
I almost exclusively use nymphs for trout. #14 16 and 18 bead head pheasant tail. Micro muddler minnows (like the kind at Orvis). San Juan worms and various bead heads.
