floating fly

Getting ready for the winter, tieing some flys when my honey do lists are done. Bought some flys {Punisher} and have tried to duplicate. With some success. Have no formal training tieing just a travel vice from BP and lots of craft hair mylar duck feathers.I just have not been able to achieve the prof. look of the package product.Looked a a few u-tube deals to get a starting place.I just can't get the duck quills to look right. Any help would be great!

Re: floating fly

The best place I can send you is Fly Anglers OnLine, Your Complete Internet Flyfishing Resource. on the left hand side of the screen click on Fly Tying then click on Beginning Fly Tying. Take the course and take your time and it will help you. or if you need more hands on help check your local area for fly tying class's I took mine free and took the course above.

The stuff you have will make fishable flies but you need dry fly hackle to get them to float right.

Hope this helps

Re: floating fly

Sorry, The floating fly does not float,it is on a 1/16th lead head jig and is supended under a float depending on what depth the fish are suspended at.Bluff walls this tactic is deadly! This was developed by smally people and us spotted bass guys have just started catching on! Is maybe the best cold water thingy I've ever found. We use to stop fishing when the water temp fell below 46. It is a revolutionary deal {at least for me.} You can see what they look like at Punisher lure web site.I will go into that fly tieing site to get more info. Thanks

Re: floating fly

Can you describe what is happening to the feathers, are the flaring, too long, etc? One thing that came to mind to try and help you, was make sure you strip the lower webby portion of the feather away from the quill, and then you can use the quill to tie into the side of the fly.

It is also helpful to pair up your feathers, right/left before tieing them in, and at the same time figure out where you need to strip the feather back to.

Dunking the feathers into a cup of warm water can help if the feathers are brittle.

OH, as a side note, if you strip one side of the feather off completely, this makes a nice dorsal fin if tied in the center.

Re: floating fly

Now that I re-read your post I fully understand. If the mallard feathers won't tie in right try steaming them use a tea kettle and steam them straight, then make sure to take the webby part off as Troul Hawk said.

I recommended the FAOL site as tying procedures for flies will make you a better jig tier. Helps train your hands.

Good luck and if you need more help let us know.
