Do most of you make your own or buy them pre made.

What are the different types of diving lips? I saw something while doing a search where someone called one type of lip a grave type or casket type or something along that line? What are those? Where do you get them from?

Thanks again guys for answering more of my questions to help get me started on the right track.

That's a real good question. Here are my conclusions.
The coffin lip is the best for deflective purposes. Through my trials it is definitely the best anywhere you have stuff to bang the lure into. When I fish these lures I don't feel the bait alot untill it starts to dig and hit stuff. Once this happens you can really feel the bait. If you watch the line close enough you will see it dance. It is the best deflective lip there is.

Round lips are use to baisically impart action on a crank. Wide crankbaits basically take wide lips to make them move. Also a round lip gives the most surface for the water to "press" on to allow the lure to achieve maximum depth quicker and easier.

Flat lips are more or less used on fat shallow running cranks like the H&T crankbaits that Jeff and Tim make. They make the bait deflect different and probably give a little more depth to the lure than a round lip put in at the same angle.

North..the coffin shaped lip is shaped like the old days coffins were..flat on top and cut at a slight angel at each corner.I think Jerry(Red-g8r) is working on a supply of bills for his store...maybe he can look for a source for the coffin bills.Until then, you will need to cut your own from Lexan..Nathan

This ones for you guys that use a lathe to turn ur baits. Do you cut the slt for the lip before or after you turn it on the lathe. If you cut the slot after turning whats a good way for the correct placem,ent of the slot. I have tried this yet maybe this coming weekend I'll try it cuting the slot before turning.

Hi there, I do it both ways. I put the lip slot in before turning the bait or sometimes after it is turned. If you put it in before be careful when turning the bait as it will chip out. I usually just sand the bait in the area where the lip slot is. Also if you want to put the lip slot in after make yourself a jig out of some square stock and make sure you can hold the bait tight in the hole you drill in the square stock. Place the bait in a predrilled hole and use screws to hold the bait into position or wrap tape around the bait so it is tight. It takes time and alittle practice but it does work. May sure to use caution when you do this.
