Re: how to make a jerkbait??

Do you want to build a wood bait or a molded bait?
If you want a wood bait do you want to build a one piece or wire through two piece?
What type of Jerkbait are you talking about?
Jerk Bait vs. Minnow Crank
Depending on your location a glider might be called a jerkbait, so we need to know a little more information to be able to help you.
Tell us a name of a jerkbait that you have in mind.

Re: how to make a jerkbait??

it'll be a wood one i'm wanting to have a bash at, it'll be one piece, the type with two flat sides and perhaps weighing between 2 and 3oz in some sort of shad shape if that makes sense?
cheers

Will it have a lip/bill/bib (whatever you want to call it) or not?

Re: how to make a jerkbait??

nope, the plan was to have something with two trebles thats it, just to try and keep it simple on my first go. or do you reckon i should just bandsaw the shape/shapes out and try them first to see if the pattern actually works??
cheers

Re: how to make a jerkbait??

What type of fish are you after? What part of the World/States are you from?
Sounds like you are wanting to build a glider and fishing for Musky or saltwater game fish.

Re: how to make a jerkbait??

Choose the shape you want, trace it out on a piece of 3/4" wood....not any narrower. Cut it ou with a scroll saw or band saw. Router the edges with a roundover bit or a flat wood file, sand. Decide where the hooks will go, mark and drill a pilot hole. Use two weights, one an inch from the front, one an inch or so from the back. Melt the lead in with a propane torch, be careful, wear eye protection and don't get the hot lead anywhere near water. put the hooks in, drop the lure in a bucket of water. The lure should sink stead and level. Once you get the right amount of lead let dry overnight. Fill the weight holes with plaster, woodfiller, epoxy putty, or bondo, sand smooth. Dip the lure in a sealer, I like sanding sealer or polycrylic...let dry overnight. Dip in a white primer, dry overnight. Paint, let dry overnight. Two coats of clear. Done deal.
