DUEL, a Japanese lure making company (maker of YO-ZURI lures) has developed some lures called "LIVE BAIT". DUEL says the lure have a soft body of acrylic polymer called PMMA injected around the wire & lead sinker. And the lure swims naturally and much durable than the soft baits.
Those are beautiful Hiro. They look as if they are made from the type of plastic you would find in a hot glue gun. I have seen craft supply shops with glue sticks that come in any color with or without glitter premixed into them. Interesting to say the least. Japan produces awe inspiring baits.
Please keep us informed as to any new products from your side of the Pacific.
Art, in a set of plans I found on a website that has disappeared, the hot glue gun has been used to create what they describe as a leathery, spongey soft "hard" plastic. I believe they labeled it "PVA", so I think you might be right about that one. There's also a vintage bait called the "pop-top" that has a spongey yet rigid form. Can't say which company exactly, I believe burke's? Unsure what it's made of but it's fun to squeeze and surprisingly water resistant.
I have considered tryin some of those tinted and metal flake glue sticks in 4part molds. Approaching it like pouring soft plastics by melting the gluesticks in sauce pans. The top area can be poured in metal flake, close the mold and allow to cool. Then open the mold and cast the 2nd plastic. When the lure is assembled laquer paint can be applied to cover seams and for the detailing.
The lures Hiro posted the link to dont look like they have a topcoat.
I'm not sure how well lures like that would sell. I'm guessing the paint wouldn't last. The clarity of the plastic would get clouded and scuffed faster with use than the average topcoated lure.
However the lure could have a leading edge in crankbaits as it is softer than a hardbait with similar action. The soft aspect of the lure could get bass to hold it for more hook sets.
