Would you consider making and selling a Jiga Jig. If so how much shipped to Baltimore. I'd like to try it on the Chesapeake bay trolling for Striped bass
Haz, thanks for the offer but I ordered some Britebak self-adhesive foil. If it works, it will be a "lifetime supply" since I don't often foil baits. I mostly fish where the largemouth bass prefer something less flashy. The last foil baits I did were for spanish mackeral on the NC coast this fall. They feed mostly on glass minnows, a very small shiny prey fish (2-3"). You do some very nice foil work! Thanks for the offer. Bob Padgett
Hi Phil, good to hear from you, sorry I missed you the other night (Day), I sent you a PM but you must have gone shopping/fishing or something. I spent about 1/2 an hour talking to Bruce instead.
Phil, I have to admit, I have not made a lure since my return from US (too busy mucking around with boat and shed), so consequently have not made any through wires.
I have never had any problems with the air pocket (I am assuming you mean the groove for the wire), but on the contrary thought they were a bit heavier at the bottom with all the wire (maybe 1 gram). But thinking of the size of your lures, maybe it would be a problem if the ‘groove’ was NOT filled with epoxy and the wood was pretty dense, any air in the bottom would tend to unbalance it- Vodkaman reckons epoxy is pretty light compared to the density of water. I some times get some lead sheet (which you would have no problem sourcing), and cut a 3mm strip and lay this along the wire (in 3mm groove), which adds about 25% more weight to the lure bottom, with the added benefit of it casts better. I have also twisted this strip into a spiral which adds more lead for the same given space. All this might add about 3 gm’s to a lure normally weighing 8- 10 gm’s Maybe you could drill a hole (along completed lure) and insert some heavy soldering wire and seal it up??
As for the glue, I have been thinking of using some of this new (to me) Polyurethane Wood Glue, you just dampen the wood with a rag and clamp together, it foams up and fills voids, oozes out of the joint, but you can peel it off the joint after it has set. It is very strong and is supposed to be “water resistant”. As I have said, I have not used it on a lure yet, but used it a fair bit building some cupboards recently and it is tough.
I have finally got all the new bits for the boat (most anyway) and am working towards having it ready for the spring trout (about 1 month). No doubt there will be a few unforeseen problems, there always is - I have spent the past fortnight trying to get the right engine connection kit for the throttle/gear cables, this local Mercury dealer is driving me mad and sending me broke.
I hope this helps or gives you some ideas, and let me know what happens - so I don’t make the same mistakes!!!
Have you got any of those big pikies lately??????.pete
Hope you are well. I need advice from you. I have been through wiring my lures since reading your tutorial and being inspired. Two questions though, first, have you tried any other glue than epoxy ?? Second question is have you had any problems with air pockets within the body ??
I have to admit I am struggling somewhat but love the idea of through wires.
Well, I made it home and walked through my door around 1pm UK time on the 2nd of May. Keep me up to date with your travels and be sure to drive safely (on the right side of the road) .
Pete,
Tell me your not using a British system of socialized medicine. My wife suffers with her gall stones and my 26 yr old daughter has had hers removed already, and that took some time to get over. Do what you need to in order to get healthy again, get your rest and don't screw around, it's to important to play with. I'm looking forward to meeting the man behind the dust mask...
Bruce
