Supertuning?

This question is for you reel junkies. I would like to supertune some of my older Abu reels. Has anyone worked with Abu's?(Round Black Max's, C3's) Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Re: Supertuning?

There is all kinds of stuff out there on supertuning ABUs. The round Black Max is not much. I have worked on those reels for folks. However, the C3 could probably be souped up alittle. www.hartlandtackle.com is a good place for bearings and oil. Find Don Iovino's site. He sells soup up kits for ABUs.

Re: Supertuning?

Here is a link on supertuning. He works on a shimano, but some of the same principles I am sure would apply to your ABUs

Re: Supertuning?

I recently upgraded my c3 5601 ab. I removed the antibacklash mechanism, installed the carbontex drag, upgraded the bearings to abec7 ceramics and a ball bearing idler kit (replaces a bushing with a bearing).

I bought all of the parts from Mike's Reel Repair. I gotta say that they were extremely helpful and answered a lot of my questions. The delivery time took a little longer because they are based in Canada, but the great customer service was worth it.

Also, you can get the schematics from the Mike's website.

Here are some links that I found helpful when I was working on mine:

- General supertuning info

- My TU post when I did mine

- Working on reels tips

Re: Supertuning?

If you want to do any supertuning in reels I would recommend checking out the TT forum Fishing Forum and just ask all the questions you feel like. Just make sure to use the search feature if it is a basic question as most forum members don't like it when the same topic is brought up more times than it needs to be. I don't do much supertuning or upgrading myself as of now, so I can't really say anything else than what the ones before me.

Re: Supertuning?

I have some of the older ABUs and putting new bearings help alot.Polishing the spool ends and using hi-speed lube works pretty well too.You can also change gear ratios and upgrade your levelwind with ones off a C5.I just ordered 2 from ABU,and I'll let you know how they work.
