Power Pro on my reel...............

I have a D.A.M. QUICK 330. It is a great old reel and I used it quite a bit when I got it back in the 70's. Then it got stored for a long time. I broke it out again last fall to fish with the Fenwick FS85 that I bought at the same time. It worked great and even the very old 15 lb test mono that was on it. I recently decided to replace the line and wound about half of the spool (very deep) with some 30 lb dacron and then the top half with Power Pro 20lb. Theory was great, but application was a different story. After the dacron, I tied the lines together, and started spooling the P/P line on; it will not center in the spool, it all wants to bunch up on the front lip of the spool. anyone have any ideas as to why. I even took it out on the boat and let it all out and reeled it in and the same thing. The spool (push button, on-off) is in the the correct position. Everything under the spool is clean and neat. HELP!!

Re: Power Pro on my reel...............

Hi

I am not an expert on reel repairs but looking logically at your problem I would look at the front to back travel of the spool it sounds like it may not be reaching the correct forward position thus missing the rear section of the line lay. Only a guess and shot in the dark but you never know. Here is a link to the reel schematic which may assist you in checking that all the parts are in the correct position and are actually present on your reel.

Good Luck.

Ps. That reel was for sale several times on ebay in September and it fetches around $ 150 or so. It is worth a repair.

Dam Quick: a Microlite exc sold @ 147.50; a 330 nib sold @ 153.51; a super ewb sold @ 34.50; a 440 nib sold @ 61.00; a Junior heart shaped body exc- sold @ 175.50; a Junior egg shaped body exc+ sold @ 47.00; a super 2S/275 exc sold @ 129.00; and a 248 exc+ sold @ 84.99.

Re: Power Pro on my reel...............

Best guess the backing line is too thick, (happens on bait casters also) the power pro will foolow inbeteen the gooves of each wind on the back.

if the backing ist exteamly tight and even the braid will dig in causing the power pro (braid) to fill in there pushing to one direction.

I havent had good luck with backing on a spinning reel unless it was 10lbs test or less. and I have used 20lb test but it is sunline sniper and its very very thin.

Re: Power Pro on my reel...............

Well, it IS an older reel model and the oscillation of the spool may indeed be different from modern reels, don't know how thin braid will work on there. Bear in mind, the old 15# that was on there and working perfectly is a darn site different than braid in diameter, PP 6/20 is purportedly around 6# mono in diameter. Put 6# mono on that reel and it might do the same thing, it looks as if it is designed to be used with heavier (and thicker) lines of any type.

You probably will have to go to a much heavier and thicker braid to get the line lay the way it's supposed to be, if nothing else it will save money. That spool looks like it would take miles of PP 6/20 to even get close to the lip!

I use about 10' of fluoro (8#) to back/tie on PP 2/10 and add as necessary to bump the line level up over a season. PIA to unspool and add at the tie-in, but too much backing and braid starts to argue with it.

Re: Power Pro on my reel...............

Thanks for the reply, I am thinking that I might just go back to mono.
