Hydrocal For Molds

Anyone ever use this stuff? They use it on model railroad scenes. I have a little but not enought to make a mold.

Plaster.com - HYDROCAL® White Gypsum Cement is a great utility gypsum cement offering higher strengths than typical plaster products.

Re: Hydrocal For Molds

I use UltraCal 30 in with my POP to give the mold some stiffness when making larger molds. Works great but does increase the drying times significantly.

Does it prolong the POP setting up?

Re: Hydrocal For Molds

Yes it does....Where POP may cure within 24 hours (with heat or other curing), adding UltraCal 30 may increase the drying time to several days. Maybe not the best for a quick mold but for the final deal, it helps harden it up real well.

Re: Hydrocal For Molds

I use straight UltraCal30. I pour in the afternoon or evening and demold the next morning. I speed up the drying by putting them on top of my furnace. It does take a lot longer than plaster to dry. I let it sit on the furnace for a week. Since I only make molds in the off season (from fishing) my routine is generally pour on Saturday, demold on Sunday morning, dry all week and seal the following Saturday.

UltraCal 30 gives great detail and the molds are very strong (and heavy). I buy it in the 50 pound pail from Plaster.com and it is about 50 bucks shipped to my house in a bucket that looks like a tall bucket of sheetrock compound.

Re: Hydrocal For Molds

is it available anywhere else? I have looked at Lowes and they don't seem to know what I'm talking about.

Re: Hydrocal For Molds

I believe plaster.com has a list of distributors. I found my nearest distributor was too far away to make the trip worth while when gasoline was 2.50 per gallon so at todays prices....................

Re: Hydrocal For Molds

Its typically available at Hobby Train stores. They use it alot for scenery and making landscapes. It usually only comes in a couple pound milk carton and is around $10 if I remember right. Look up a nearby hobby store and they will proabably have it. here is a link to one I found.

Go to ehobbies.com and search for hydrocal. It is the first one in the upper left hand corner. Hope this helps!
