Web site design

I have really enjoyed reading all of the great info this site has to offer. I am just starting my business(handpours and custom rods). Does anyone have any suggestions on a web site designer. I am not the best guy to ever run a computer if you know what I mean. I am wondering if I should have someone local do it, or perhaps one of you might have some suggestions. I really appreciate the help. I look forward to future discussions.

Here is a free web hosting site.
You still have to register a domain name,
if you want it on the WWW, it doesn't cost much.

As a graphic designer who has done a bunch of captain webpages, here's a couple things that will save you some money.

1. Go to htp://www.godaddy.com and register your domain name yourself. If you want someone to do it for you, you might be charged as much as $75.00, and thats ridiculous.

2. Check into web design with hosting included. Try not to use the free web hosting places that add banners and pop-ups all over because people are sick and tired of pop-ups and weird banners. Hosting for a year shouldn't be more than 80-120 dollars. I charge 7.95 per month unless I do the site and I give you hosting for a year.

3. You can find someone to make a generic site for you, and you will see results, but have someone that is professional. Anyone can make a website, but only good ones see major results.

4. Ask about minor search engine optimization when you designer makes the site. Simple minor tags, titles and descriptions will help you more than you will EVER know. A full blown out SEO work can be VERY expensive, but little tricks of the trade will be a good thing for a small business.

5. Check out the other sites the designer has done recently, and ask for comments from clients, and find out how long this is going to take them. It shouldn't be a long process unless your completely anal, and you want a certain look and your not getting it.

Hope this helps, if you need help please email me and I will see what I can do for you.

Tight lines and screaming reels...sc

One last common mistake by newcomers to web design.

Your monitor only displays images at 72 dpi, so scanning your images like they are for print (300 dpi) or you think the higher dpi I scan the better the image will look is a complete mistake. Just makes the people that are dialup wait longer for your site to load.

This is one thing that I see a lot when I look at people's website. 150 dpi on their images makes is 200% longer to load, when 72 dpi is all that your seeing as is.

Just another helpful hint for all....

Take Steves advice on godaddy.com.

I have all my domains registered thru godaddy (including TU) & thier a great service.

$9.00 a year godaddy, compared to
70+ $ for 2 years at network solutions.
do the math, knowing/hiring someone experienced, or researching for yourself can save you easily.
