Everytime I try and upload a pic the uploader does not pop up I would really like to find a new host, I really am just looking for a place to show case my stuff not really sales just to let people know what I have and can do. I don't want to pay for it though One thing I have not been able to do is make a decent color chart how can I do this Also does anyone know how you make the small pictures that you click then they become enlarged pop-ups Please suggest any good host with easy web site building. As you can tell I am not a computer guy, I dont know html so I need somethinhg pretty easy. Also I am using Kodak easy share photo software does anyone know how to split a photo say 1 half is a fish the otehr is teh pic of teh lure I cought it one?
Thanks, Tm
youre gonna get what you pay for, so if you want free, expect little or no personal help.
If you dont wanna at least learn HTML I suggest you look for an affordable web designer. they usually stay up on free/affordable hosting.
Your color chart & split photos need to be done with graphic editing software, you likely have one bundled w/ your system. open it up & click the help tab & read up on cropping & merging photos. thats what your looking for.
My learning experience has found tripod a.k.a. lycos a.k.a. angelfire as a decent free host since they allow CGI scripting & easy package upgrades if you wanna pay & expand. They will bombard your visitors with popup ads which I personally cant stand, but 90% of free hosts do that also.
I actually sat down a couple of years back and "test drove" about twenty five to thirty of the most popular "freebie" web site design programs and found that only about two of them were actually worth the trouble.
There are tricks the other guys like to pull like getting you to half way through it and then attempting to force you into purchasing a URL from the registrar of their choice at an inflated price.
Then they will want to charge you a yearly registration renewal fee plus a maintenance fee. Then when you directly ask them if you will be the sole proprietor of the URL they will not give you a direct answer. This obviously means they are up to no good.
Another trick is to get you to use their service and then x amount of hours later they will delete your info. Their reply will always be "Oh yeah well the only way to avoid this is to purchase blah blah blah from us to assure this doesnt happen". If you value your time as money the you may have ten or twelve hours tied up and nothing to show for it. This will make you mad enough to throw your computer through the window.
Yahoo is really sneaky about it. They will take your credit card number and use caller id to block your calls. During this time period you think that it is just a technical problem so you are not aware you need to cancel your purchase. Only after the purchase is cleared and they have your money then will they talk to you. They will blatantly refuse to give you a credit for the purchase amount and also advise you not to establish additional contact with them concerning your problem. They are the ones who are bad about the hidden service traps the add on costs.
Since I host my own web sites off of my own server from my house, I guess you can kinda call them free.
If you are going to be wanting to register your own domain name I would suggest going with someone like godaddy.com they are a great company and have very good prices. I know you wanted free, but like some else said you get what you pay for. The domain name will only cost you something like $8 a year, and the also offer hosting.
Heck I don't know WoodSac, I just bought the domain and assumed one was the same as the next....looks like I got ripped off, lol. I know it was somewhere around 20 bucks for the purchase and renewal.
If you are paying too much for your domain, i.e., over $9.00 per year, you can transfer your domain to a less expensive registrar. I use quickandeasywebsites.com which is an affiliate of godaddy.com. (Same prices and same customer support as godaddy).
The last time I transferred one, it was from Network Solutions who charges $30 per year. I had to pay one year's registration or $8.75 to move it to quickandeasywebsites.
There are plenty of budget domain registrars around and they all do the exact same thing - just charge different amounts.
Widowmakers comment about Yahoo kind of has be worried. For the last two days, a total of over 16 hours on the computer, I have managed to build two web sites (free to start with) with the intention of upgrading before publishing. I have also done price comparison on the sites. All in all, Yahoo looks the best, with the easiest online and offline page building.
Does anyone else have anything to say about the Yahoo services? Right now it looks like $$11.95 per month will get me a registered domain name, 2 GB disk space, 25 GB data transfer, 25 email accounts and the upgraded bells and whistles on the web page. Yahoo is the only site so far that has let me build a site and sort of publish it using one of their sub domains. This is great for letting other look at what you have done so far. The page is simp[e and of course need a few of those buttons so navigation and bage clutter will be minimized, but I did greate a home page and a linked photo page.
Jerry, I'm not sure if it is correct for me to put this lnk in this message so it can be reviewed by more knowledgeable people and commented on, but I will do so and you can remove it if need be. This link is for test purposes only and many of the photos and much of the infor will change.
