Some friends of ours operate a couple of those rental storage units - they have the usual trouble w/ renters etc. Most recently, someone in the midst of a divorce just walked away from a unit about the size of a single garage, wouldn't pay rent etc, no contact info - just walked away…..
They (friends) ended up - foreclosing / evicting - basicly - the rent is past due - not able to make contact w/ owner - the stuff is ours. So they were going to sort thru the stuff - send off what was good to a consignment auction.
There was stuff which could sell, but junk too - ie stuff like boxes of personal photos, etc, so it had to be sorted thru. They asked if we wanted to help - and if there was anything we wanted…..
There was a Delta 14" band saw - but Dave (owner) was going to keep that, and I already have a small scroll saw….didn't need lawn furniture, lots of plumbing type tools / equipment, some car/truck tune up stuff - timing light, etc…..didn't need a smoker, nor a fish fryer base….tons of boxes, but where do you start? Saw a rod case - fly rod? Darn - empty. Turkey decoys and goose decoys - have those….Pedestle chairs for a boat….A tackle box was full of nuts and bolts….so far, nothing of real interest…..
Then I spotted a five gallon pail 1/2 full of what looked to be scrap metal - heavy as all get out - lead! I grabbed it - then Dave said "you use that to make fishing stuff?" - yep I replied …. He then goes on to say there's a box here somewhere with some molds…. Looks around - found it…..
It had some DO-IT molds for jigs and spinnerbaits, plus the asstd tools for jig and lure making. Box also contained a bunch of other fishing/hunting stuff - including some vintage bait casters - one in the orignal box - and some other reels, some vintage lures - bunch of them being wooden ones, and other stuff.
Later found a 2nd box of reels and more lures, another container of lead, and 3rd container of boat stuff. Also got two nearly new boat cushions and a pair of clamp-on boat chairs - will fit my 12' boat (no more leg cramps ) ….plus a bunch of books on fishing and hunting….
The molds are for collar-less ball jigs in 1/32 - 1/4 oz, 1/4 & 3/8 oz spinner baits, and something called a Cabelas wobble jig - a somewhat wide/flat body….for walleyes? I figure that if I put the lead from the second container in the pail, the pail w/ be 2/3 - 3/4 full, and heavier than I can lift. Most of it is in small ingots - about the size of muffins/cupcakes.... there is also a "brick" of lead that measures about 2" x 3" by 14"....
Up till now, I had figured I'd buy my jigs and concentrate on the finishing side - paint and dressings - but now - I just might try casting some....
Offered Dave a $100 - he wouldn't take it, he said $25, we settled at $50...
