spinnerbait wire and hooks

I am getting a do it spinnerbait mold and it says .40 or .41 wire to be used. Is that just a suggestion? I am wanting some big spinners with .35 wire but will it work in these molds or am I going to have trouble using anything but .40? Same thing with hooks - I want to use owners but it says I have to use this certain # eagle claw. Are these just suggestions or can I make it work? 1st time spinnerbait mold pourer.

Re: spinnerbait wire and hooks

First of all we need you to use the correct terminology. All the wire diameter you see listed are .040, .041 and .035. The numbers you listed .35 and up would be wire all over 11/32” thick. That’s impossible. I don’t want to seem arrogant, but that’s the way the decimal system works. The smaller the decimal, .035 the thinner the wire diameter. .035 is the thinnest wire diameter you mentioned, with .041 being the thickest. As far as what sizes fit what, this is what I’ve found. I make a fair amount of spinnerbaits. I use all pre-bent wire forms. All pre-bent wire forms in most of the stores, carry the sizes listed by Do-It molds for a reason. Reason being is this. Do-It designs their molds around these diameter wires, so you get good pours. If you use too big (or large) of a wire diameter, your mold won’t close (unless you modify the mold), and you will get flash around your finished product. If you use too small of a diameter, you will get lead to pour down the wire shaft. Also the wire diameters are based on strength and breakage. You wouldn’t pour a 1 oz. spinnerbait on a .020 wire. You could, but you will be breaking a lot of wire. If I were you, I would start, with what is recommended at first, to get the hang of pouring and how it works…...As far as hooks go, for every Eagle Claw hook, there is usually a Mustad Ultra-Point equivalent. Owner hooks may have many matches also, but you may have to ask here to see who pours which mold with which Owner hooks. My experience with Eagle Claw and Mustad is this. You can usually go up or down one hook size, than the one listed on the mold with out any problems, and without modifying the mold…………I hope this helps…. What mold do you have, and what hooks do you intend to use? This information will help others give you correct answers to your thread. If you need more help just ask.

Hi

I would suggest you follow the link to Reeves who recently put some Owner hooks for offer to TU members. I understand the hooks he has are OK with Do-It spinnerbait molds.

You can use .035 wire as I use it all the time. Like Cadman mentioned usually you can go up or down one size at least with hooks. One thing to remember though is that all 3/0 spinnerbait hooks are not the same size. Mustad and Gamakatzu are the same size but owners run about 1 size larger.

Re: spinnerbait wire and hooks

Thanks for the replies. That gives me some good ideas on what I am going to do. And yeah cadman I got in a hurry and wrote my numbers in hundreths rather than thousandths but I'm not a complete idiot - I know how the decimal system works.

I'm getting the do-it ultra minnow spinner jig in 5/8, 3/4, and 1 oz. I was going to try a couple of different pre-bent wire lengths in .035 wire and I would like to use the owner 5320 in 4/0 or 5/0 if anyone know if this hook is comparable to the eagleclaw 253 which is what the recommended hook is.

Re: spinnerbait wire and hooks

I pour all my 1/2oz spinnerbaits with .035 wire, I just use a small piece of masking tape on each side of the mold, this holds the smaller wire firmly in place. Munkin is correct about the owner hooks, I like Mustad but I also use Gamakatsu and owner on occasion and if the mold calls for a 3/0 hook I use a 4/0 gammy, or mustad but a 3/0 Owner.

Re: spinnerbait wire and hooks

I have the ultra minnow mold also. I use .029 wire on the 1/8 and 1/4 oz heads and .035 wire on the larger heads. I also use oversized hooks, usually one size larger than called for. I use straight wires and form them after with round jaw needle nose pliers. I do sometimes have some flash but remove it and continue.
