When using plastic cups it has to be virgin laquer thinner.With acetone it will be just a gooey mess

I´d suggest you look at Coley´s answer .Why mount lip before you paint it? It will only give you more hassle& job to do .

Either fill it with styrofoamballs or glue a piece of lexan to the open part with epoxy or just remove tail add curly tail with thruwire

You can make a mold of them too ,but then you wont get the shiny belly

I´ve used Swedish pine & Aspen both works good for me just remember to dry it thorougly, look into your firewood stack if you got any aspen there bring it inside to dry
