  1. I will play with the air settings. I do try to start off the bait but sometimes you want a short line like for a gill.
  2. Hi guys, I am having trouble making the thin lines or the rainbow trout pink line. I tend to get some splatter or wash out especially at the beginning of my line. I am using a paasche gravity feed. I think I may have to much air or too thin of paint. I use model master enamel or createx and have not made either work. Thanks!
  3. You can use spray cans, but you won't get the fine detail. If you have a harbour freight tools near you, they sell a generic airbrush kit for $15 or so that will do most painting until you get totally addicted. Another trick I like is to take window frame making material from Home depot and make a frame maybe 4" X 12" and lay your scale pattern in it instead of screening. Then use a hinge on one side or just clamp both sides around the bait. This will hold it in place and keep your mesh tight. This works best on flat sided baits like rattle traps and some swimbaits, not so good for deep divers and other round baits.
  4. Thanks guys, that makes sense! I was pouring from the tail because this gave me the best place to cut and sand smooth. I think I will try pouring from the top of the lure towards the head and see how it looks. What is the limit on adding microballoons? For mixing, I have taken an old spade bit drill and smoothed out all of the edges. Works great in the makita on slow speed!
  5. Hi all! I am trying to make a copy of a topwater bait into something other than wood. I used alumilite 4 oz. to 4 tablespoons of microballoons. The copy floats lower in the head and higher in the tail, and when retrieved tilts all the way on it's side. I was going to try the 16 lbs. foam next but I have not had much luck with it before? Can any of you Gurus enlighten me? Also, where can I find some of the dorsal fin material. I have used fly tying material ( mayfly tails and Microfibits), but these are to small. Thanks to all.
  6. Thanks BBK, I will give it a try. Any solution to the fading of colors or is it just too much cooking time.
  7. I am heating with a Microwave, stirring with an old butter knife, and probably stirring to aggressively.
  8. I have already read replies form earlier posts, but still having problems. first is that I let the heated plastic set so the bubbles surface, but more appear as I pour or stir. Also, when I make transparent colors like smoke, the color fades and gets lighter before I have puored it all. Thanks.
  9. Thanks for the advice! Yes, they do appear as pinholes. I have lightly sanded before a second primer coat and they still appear. My molds are coming out smooth, there is an adhesion problem. Is primer not Necessary?

    primers

Hi all, I had problems with primer not sticking to my alumilite baits, there were little spots where it would not stick. Should I dip the baits in alcohol to clean or wipe it down with a rag? also, what primers work well? I was just using spray can primer. Thanks in advance!
