  1. There are 2 types of rabbit strips: Crosscut & straight-cut (AKA "zonker strips"). Zonkers come in 2 sizes: Standard & magnum. Magnums are wider. It's more economical to buy fur scraps & cut them yourself. Just turn it skin-side up, clamp it in something or have someone hold it tight, then slice using something very sharp. I use an Xacto knife. (Note: scissors do NOT work well for this.) Hilltop sells nice bags of fur scraps for $4.19/bag. I've bought 3 of them so far! The only disadvantage is that the colors vary. Buying scraps is like a box of chocolates -- ya never know what you're going to get. Here's a link: RABBIT HIDE PIECES VARIETY PACK FLY TYING FISHING FLIES - eBay (item 390026780491 end time Feb-01-09 18:09:13 PST) This is currently my favorite crappie jig, and it's made with a chartreuse zonker + white marabou. (1/16 oz pearl white head, #4 Matzuo sickle hook)
  2. Here's a little experiment from last year. Trout really dig it. Weighted fly version: Jig version: The "hardtop" is a fake fingernail with 2 coats of nail polish. First coat is black; second coat is clear holograph. Holographic polish is a freaky because it looks VERY different in the bottle than it does when applied over other colors. The "blue" specs (not really blue but they look that way) fluctuate between visible & invisible depending on the angle you are looking from. The fuzzy yarn is also trippy because it looks white when dry, but looks semi-clear with a slight purple hue when wet. I think it's UV enhanced. Forgot the brand. Found it at a craft store while shopping for beads. Wadaya think?
  3. Sweet! I tie a lot of jigs and the techniques are the same as fly tying. Bucktail is something I haven't used much of, but it looks like a good material. Do you ever use calf tail? I hear that it "flows" a little better than bucktail. Maybe I'll have to post a tutorial for my "Fat Albert" jig. It's made with marabou + a rabbit strip (zonker) and it's deadly on crappie.
