I'm new here, and I was wondering if anybody has used silicone putty to make a jig head? I have been making my own jigs for 35 years and recently fished with a friend who was using a jig made by a company, and he gave me one.. I love that jig head and none of my 30 molds are anything like that jig. I saw on the internet videos of a silicone putty that people are using to pour jigs. Granted it would not last very long from the heat. But if I could get 2 dozen heads from it i would be a happy camper. They are for my personal use. Thanks for any and all help.

Jighooper I have made countless molds from Durhams water putty. After a while they will start to break down. The key is to not pour to many at one time. I generally pour 6 - 8 at a time. I’m still using molds I made two years ago. When I make a mold I bake them at 250 degrees for an hour to get them dry. Pouring a mold that still has moister will spew lead like a volcano. Before I pour I dust the cavities with talcum powder for better lead flow. If I can figure out how to post a picture I’ll show you a couple I have made.

Could some one that has the magnum Midwest finesse jig please measure the diameter and thickness of the head on  the 5/8  and 9/16 oz size  Trying to see how it would fit to a 8" grub that I have recently purchased. Thanks in advance.

    5/8 is 1/2 inch wide x 1/2 inch long. 9/16 is 1/2 inch wide x 7/16 inch long. 5/8 is 1.771 grams heavier.

So looking for some ideas.  Would love to find the Jackhammer hook but not sure it exists in the wild except small packs of the Game heavy cover flipping hook.  But for guys who are pouring their own bladed jigs, what hook and size are you using?  I started with the standard spinnerbait hooks but would like to find shorter shank and wider gap hook.  TIA

    Rob

Not sure why you want a short shank hook for your chatterbait. I want to keep the blade a good distance from the hook point to ensure a hook up. Currently I’m using the Owner straight shank worm hook in 4 and 5/0 and also the Bass Pro Shops straight shank worm hook in 5/0. No problems with either of these.

  4. Sorry for the late reply.

Currently using using the do-it style S bass jig mold JKS 3-A-Y and a mold I made for hair jigs. Just for an example I have a Shawn Collins stand up jig mold that resembles a D& L Advantage jig. The 1/2 ounce uses a Mustad 4/0 with a wire diameter of 0.059. I would like this same size hook but with a diameter of 0.051.

  5. Going against the grain on this one. I have never been a fan of a heavy wire hooks and it seems that every manufacturer when they produce a hook with a wider gap they go up in hook length and hook diameter. I do understand the need for a heavy hook for short line fishing and using braid such as when flipping.  For me when I'm fishing a jig in deep water I want a thinner wire hook and I want a wide gap. Currently I'm taking a Mustad 6/0 32746 and bending it to 60 degrees to fit my mold. its wire diameter is .052. If you look at the Mustard 32786 4/0 60 degree its close in length and gap size as the 32746 but its diameter jumps up 8 thousands. Why not make a 60 degree the same as the 32746?

    They look nice.

I am not sure if I am seeing the swivel correctly in your pics. You may want to put the swivel the other way especially if you will do any bottom hopping with those baits.  I usually put the rotating end of the swivel towards the back to reduce the dirt and lake snot the can get into the swivel and shorten its life span. The non-rotating fixed end of the swivel will be in the front and they is no way particles can get into that side.

Thanks for pointing that out. Makes sense. May even make the blade start quicker.

What I did was dremel out the area to except the coil on both sides of the mold but what I do now is make the coil and screw up on the jig head. Then I powder coat and cure. This will lock it to the jig head.

Simply put the  jignspin is nothing more than a  jig with a jig spinner attached. I've done that a lot of times in summer on bright moonlit nights for smallmouth. They'll thump it

Yep. Used them years ago. Used to flip them around standing temper. Made a mold and wanted to see wire length and angle.

    Hello,

I just started using my Do-it hybrid grass jig mold. I’m having trouble with the 3/8 oz pouring completely. The other weights pour fine. Also it is a pain to keep the hook aligned to close the mold. I think I will add or modify my mold before next pour. Any suggestions???

I spray my molds with liquid graphite. Prior to pouring I dust the cavities with talcum powder and blow off excess. After several pours I re-dust. Also make sure you mold and hook are hot.

Does anyone know where to get a mold for this swim jig? Or where to buy them in bulk?

Looks very similar to the Boss swim jig at fishingskirts.com
