  1. Just got some lurecraft and MF plastic and definitely less smelly than alumisol. At least to this guys nose
  2. In California we have the orange belly salamanders ( or California newt as they are officially called) and they are all over the place in my neck of the woods. I did a search online about them a while ago and found out they are extremely toxic to fish and even humans when ingested. A poor kid in Oregon ate one on a dare from his friends and ended up dying. My grandpas pond is loaded with these things and the bass wont touch them except during the spawn when they grab them and throw them off the nests if they get too close. I had always wondered why I couldn't get a hit when I caught one and through it on a line. Supposedly the larval form of these salamanders( Waterdogs) are not toxic yet and bass love them. Not sure what kind you have there but do a search, they might be toxic to the fish. Grandpas pond has an abundance of frogs and the fishing slows down because the Bass are loaded with them! I've reeled in bass so full they have frogs still half in their mouths!
  3. So, since I've started making my own baits and invested in a couple aluminum molds (because I'm a perfectionist) I've noticed some soft baits at the tackle store seem to be from the molds you can buy online from BAsstackle or BTS or Delmart etc..... Not the big companies like zoom or berkely but from small bait makers trying to sell their baits. I even saw a you tube video that a local guy admitted that most of the baits he markets are just form Basstackle molds. My question is how prevalent is this and do any of the companies that market these molds care if you sell their bait designs? Are their any legal implications? Any insight is appreciated. As a disclaimer I just pour for myself & friends-no selling just figuring out how this all works.
  4. Wear gloves!!! Burnt my finger pretty bad last night, I was lucky it could have been a lot worse.
  5. Thanks mark, I've noticed that the re heats do smell a little more even when heated correctly and not burnt. I'm not selling just making for me and my buddys so I can definitely play around with things. Took the advice of curing on a stone and over a couple of weeks they smell less like plastic without any scent. Will be adding scent in the future though. Never been a huge believer in it for bass fishing but if it covers up the plastic smell and my scent what the hell, why not. Thanks everyone for all the insight.
  6. Thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it. I saw the phalate free advertisement on another brand of plastic. Did some more research and found some people that said alumisol smells a little worse than others. Think I was bagging them too fast also.
  7. What's up everyone, my name is Jason and I live in Suisun City Ca. I've been fishing my whole life but just got into pouring my own plastics and it is awesome. This has been probably the best resource site for luremaking I have found so I decided to join. I went through a lot of posts before I joined and this site has my imagination running wild with what I could make. Living in the SF bay area has been a blessing between the ocean, bays, delta, cold/warm water lakes and of course the mountain streams all within a days drive-lots of great fishing year round, which means I have a lot of lure building to do! We just had our first baby so it has given me something to do while still being around the house. Thanks for all the help, seems to be a lot of good people and good info on this site.
  8. What's up guys, new to the site and just started pouring a few months ago. Lots of good info on here. Pouring your own baits is like crack cocaine for fisherman! I have a question that I need some insight from experienced pourers on. I have only used the allumilite plastic so far. Ordered some other stuff but haven't got it yet. All of the worms I've poured have a strong plastic smell to them. I have used worm oil before and after pouring but the smell is pretty strong. Do all plastics smell that way? Or are some products better than others? What is yours guys take on scent as far as how much and when to add it to make the plastic smell go away? I know scent is not as important in bass fishing as movement and color but it a pretty strong smell. I opened up some store bought bags of worms and some smell like plastic and some don't. Is it even an issue that it smells like plastic? Any insight is appreciated
