  1. Oh it’s definitely necessary for catching fishermen and there is no doubt about it. I have stepped up my efforts with an air brush for this very reason alone
  2. So you hang out here as well. I am on AO under Smoky buck (I am also a dirty muzzleloader hunter is why) Definitely let me know what you think of the laser cutter. As you can tell I am trying to refine my lip making process. Need something that is less time consuming and can be done with less focus

    Now that is awesome
  4. Glad you can benefit from my past screw ups I will likely keep screwing up and coming up with more solutions to problems in the future building a wealth of knowledge from my stupidity
  5. Sure glad my priority is creating a lure and its action. This whole world of painting sounds down right unfriendly and dare I say mean even Starting to wonder how many pages this one will go
  6. It might be best to explain what style of joint you are using to make it easier to try and help I am going to assume pin style joint and if that is the case I don’t know of a method to get away with dipping. I am pretty sure with this style you have to brush it on
  7. Thanks the eyes are a result of me not liking the placement of the original eye sockets I put in. Rather then start over I decided to reconstruct the face with my rasp to see what I could come up with. This was the end result
  8. That green one looks like it has seen some teeth I was debating a wake style bait like your pics but just wanted to go in a different direction. I want to attempt something that would have me step beyond my normal bag of tricks.
  9. Easy fix then take a scalpel and carve some divots. Build your LEGO box, cover with release agent and pour your next half on top. Basically sink the scalpel part way and cut out a cone. It’s not as pretty but works just as good Of course with your master lol
  10. First did you pour one side of your mold or both? I am a blundering idiot at times so I have had to fix this problem with a complete mold and when I only poured half. I hope you only poured half because it’s an easier fix once I know which mistake you made I will type out the solutions I used
  11. thanks Wayne I will have to look around and see if having them made is a feasible option. I am really just trying to find my options for a good solution that is consistent quality with reasonable efforts I have sweet talked myself into free lexan scrap from the local glass shops so it would be nice to use this resource. The cost of a hobby laser cutter is not too bad price wise but digging into it on the Internet the problem of an ugly burnt edge comes up
  12. New deep diver prototype I decided to test a new sucker pattern on
  13. I am that fishermen that basically refuses to use the local favourite lures lol. One of my fishing buddies is the same way. 2 of the small towns we lived in over the years we completely changed how the locals fished some species from locals catching onto what we were doing lol Here is a prototype I am working on to give you an idea. Like I said my carving style can fall somewhere in between the North American and Australian style crankbaits. This one does not have as much of a curve as some of my others. It’s a 20cm deep diver and odds are if it eats fish and can fit it in their mouth they will bite it Odds are everything I make would work in Australia just like a lot of your lures would work here in Canada
  14. no luck checking the fly kit. Next time I see it in the tackle shop I will write the name down. It’s basically like a string with fur coming off it. It has kind of a fox tail look I have been carving baits with a curve similar to that AC invader before I even seen an Australian crankbait. I just have had good results with different banana style baits. Actually just paint a new deep diver to test out with a slight curve. The paddler is going to be my first intentionally Australian inspired lure. I will be trying it on shallow water pike What I have learned from fishing different areas and species a lot of lures plus fishing styles transfer over to different species really well. The funny thing is most fishermen won’t try something new till someone out fishes them using it lol
  15. They can be kept in a lot of waters in northern BC and there is very high population in some areas. Where I live now in Alberta Bulls are all C&R do to a combination of the loss of some bull populations and the bull trout being the provincial fish. In Alberta I can still C&R a lot of bulls in some water systems Personally I rarely eat fish anymore and when I do it’s white meat fish. I ate way too many trout/salmon in the past when I owned a trout farm and was a guide not a fan of them now lol Bulls are my favourite trout/char species to target do to their aggression
  16. Welcome and warning fly tying is like the gateway drug of the lure making world.
  17. Welcome to the forum I cut my teeth on trout and salmon as a kid on BCs coast. These were the first species I started building lures for. These days I am on the east side of the Rockies. The only trout I fish now are Lakers, browns, and bulls.
  18. After further research I will pass on the laser cutter idea
  19. Who knows maybe I will glue some fur on one of my crankbaits to see if your onto something
  20. You Australians definitely have a unique style of lure building. I am still on my morning coffee so can’t remember what it’s called but there is a synthetic subtle for rabbit strip. I will check my fly tying kit to see if I have any to get the name. I know my rabbit strip flies that last a long time the leather starts to rot or stiffen up A while back a member here commented the one of my crankbaits looked very Australian so out of curiosity I started looking into the different designs you guys use. Some of my crankbaits are definitely lost somewhere between North American and Australian for shapes at times I am actually working on a surface paddler similar to what you guys use for Murray cod. After learning about this style of lure I want to try it on pike here in Canada
  21. Been looking at the different options for improving my process for making lexan lips. I have seen the router option that was suggested in another thread and may go this way. The other option I am looking at is a laser cutter. Looking at the hobby size machines Does anyone have experience with these hobby size laser cutters? Do you find they make a consistent quality lexan lip? any useful experienced information or advice we be great
  22. Just a little progress on the paddler project I am winning The style of lexan wing I am using the 30 degree angle used on the jitterbug is not the ticket. An angle of 45-50 degree sees a much better action could probably push 60 degree but have not tried. The wing also cannot sit as deep in the water as the cup on a jitterbug Overall the style of actions are similar but the construction principles are definitely different.
  23. I have only made wooden lures out of cedar but I assume this would still work. I use etex thinned with acetone but honestly it’s because I have the two products on hand and just how I have always done it
