Welcome. You are right. I grew up in east Texas and lived in Alex, La. I have seen thousands of crawfish of every seasonal color. They walk forward and scoot backwards. Great bait and great for a Cajun meal.

Anyone else ever notice that nearly all crawfish patterns on crankbaits are painted where the claws would be toward the bill of the lure? It seems odd to me, given that crawfish don't move very quickly going forward. Crawfish move much nearer the speed of a crankbait when they are going backwards, trying to evade a predator. Excepting Rebel and the Wee-R craw, I think maybe Live Target and Rapala are the only two companies that I've seen which offer crawfish patterns which are painted in what I think is the more natural orientation. I know fish can't reason, and I'm sure they aren't inspecting the lures and thinking to themselves "that crawfish is swimming the wrong way." All that to say, it's interesting to me the orientation of most craw patterns on cranks.
Yes, I have and also noted that the shrimp are the same way.

What do you guys use to secure your eyes to the lure body? I've used super glue, and thought about trying CA glue for model aircrafts. Im having a little trouble with them coming off at times. Any help would be appreciated.
I've been using Gorilla Super Glue Gel and it works very well for me, but I use enamels.

Great tip. I heard that some builders use a comb, but I don't know what kind of comb.
I have been using your tip and you're right it worked. Thank you.

Great advice guys..
I too got into to it to fast and have sdpent over $ 8000.00 in apx 2 years. I am still apx. $ 5000.00 behind. It will take me 3-4 years more to come out on top.It is great fun to make baits you can catch fish on. Our baits work great and we catch lots of fish.. But getting other people to change from what they use and are doing well with is NOT easy..
good luck with what ever you do..
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
I have a friend that's a Virginia tournament bass fisherman and he uses jigs and spinnerbaits. I told him I was making baits and he was interested and wanted to see them. I took about 50 to his office and he seemed pretty impressed. He laid four jigs out and asked if I could mock them. He wanted 10 of each, if I could do it. He also asked me if I could make certain spinnerbaits, so I showed him those too. He had four designs and wanted 5 of each. I wasn't under pressure to make them and made sure I had the right materials. I let him "test drive" some for me and let me know the results. The bonus for me is that he offers me productive fishing trips.

I am curious about posting skirt colors on here, like they have for the soft plastics with the cookbook.
Maybe a picture of your jig and how many of what strands and color. Has this already been done?
I'm new to making jigs and just curious.
I posted a few that I worked on recently and I'll add more spinnerbaits and jigs as I go. The red jigs are my Potomac Craw Slammers. I made these for a friend of mine.

We have fished a lot of the same water. Millwood is a bit of a haul for me so I haven’t fished there. Pass by on my way to Toledo and Fork sometimes.
I also fished Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn. Spent many days on Rayburn when it first opened. We lived in Lufkin. My dad used to dove hunt there before it was a lake. We took many big Crappie in the old wood line out from Hank's Marina. I never got to fish Fork.

Sounds killer!!! Welcome to TU
I lived in Magnolia and Hot Springs and fished Millwood, Ouachita, Hamilton, and Catherine and caught a lot of fish in each. Millwood had the largest bass. That's where I learned to Texas rig worm fish. We made our own worms and had one that looked exactly like a real worm. Great bait. Another bait I used was a purple worm with white curled tail.

Thank you. I was recently asked to build 30 jigs and 20 spinnerbaits for a tournament bass fisherman. He's been using them and catching fish. He took 4th two weeks ago and missed 1st place by 4 ounces. As I build them I'll share a few recipes. The attached photo shows a few build last week.

I have been looking for a forum that has jig/spinnerbait recipes, especially the skirts. This one is my Frog Skipper:
Green Finesse head/3D Chartreuse eyes
1 Tab Green/Black Speckles
5 Strands Purple with blue sheen
1 Tab Brown/Black Speckles
A killer bait!

Sometimes we have to experience things to find out why that lightbulb didn't work. I found that if you take a clean plastic pocket comb and use the larger end first and the smaller next, the strands of skirt making material will separate. Tip of the day.
