Recommended Posts

My name is john franklin,I have been a member for a little while,49 years old in wisconsin,I have a cabin and a fishing rental in the cranberry bogs of warrens wi and spend all of the spring summer weekends there fishing for pike, bass and crappies,I have gained a wealth of knowledge in just a short time from this site,I have come up with many awsome big fish bait ideas and have put them to use,I also give lures that I have made to my fishing rental customers and to people at the lakes to try,its a blast,I have caught many bass over 8 pounds and one over 9 lbs on my own lures,I have not made many post but plan to share any info if i think I can help. Most of the time someone has already answered the quetion,I hate to repeat what someone else has already said but if I have a diff opinion ill chime in,thanks fro all your ideas and help.:)

John.

After reading FatFingers' post, I had to check out you baits. Those are very cool! They remind me to a trip through my grandpa's tackle box as a kid fisking in Tomahawk on the Jerrsy City Flowage. That same woodgain peaking through the paint. Your Arrow Frog also reminds me of a pike bait he used to fish... Thanks for the memories.

My name is Allen and I have been making baits off and on since I was 12. I carved a couple cranks back then but didn't know about ballasting or coating the bait so I gave up on them. Kind of quit fishing for a few years when I was active duty in the Army but started back when I moved back to Maryland. Now I have been making mostly spinnerbaits and jigs with some cranks for the last 4 years. Right now I am attempting the UR baits with the help of all the info I have learned on this site.

Nice thread. Interesting to see everyone's background. My name is Chris and I live in No. Virginia working as an airline pilot. Started making my own tackle back in the late 80's by making hand pour worms when I lived out west. This evolved into jigs, spinnerbaits and finally repainting and making baits. After a job layoff in 06', I started a website and started selling a few lures and repaints. I must say that the knowledge base here is beyond compare and I owe much to all who contribute.

Thanks to all,

Chris Poole

Hello fellas. I'm the newest of new. I have just begun to visit this site on any kind of regular basis in the last few weeks. Though an avid bass fisherman I know nothing about making fishing lures of any kind. However, I've gotten the bug BAD and am setting up my own workshop to make my own. Naturally, in addition to all the reading and research I have done, this site is my go to place for "first hand experience".

As I move forward with my trial and error attempts at makng lures I'll certainly share my experiences, both failures and successes. They will, I suspect, be of little value to anyone other than other beginners.

As for my personal profile, I'm 59, married, two children, four grandchildren and the VP of a master distributor of medical/surgical products. I don't golf or hunt. I FISH!!! Soon I hope to tell you I caught fish on my own "works of art".

Thanks to all for letting me participate.

Hello.

My name is Tim Quick, I live in the UP of Michigan, I'm married, and I have 2 kids, twins, both grown now, one boy and one girl. I own a small sheet metal shop with about 5 guys working. I like to make prop baits, because there is nothing better than a top water hit. A good friend of mine used to fish with an old guy that fished Southbend Nippy's.

My friend would go to antique shops to buy the color that the old man had, because he always caught a lot of fish. But now they are almost impossble to buy, and the new knockoffs are junk. So I decided to make some, which took about 2 yrs to figure it all out. I would like to thank everyones help on this matter. I try to contribute where I can, but not to many questions on nippy's. I am trying to make crankbaits as well but so far out of about 10 I made 4 swam good enough to use. If anyone needs a sheet metal favor or topwater question I would be glad to help. by the way I'm 43 yrs old, and I guess even though are kids grow up we still stay invoved.

Name: Tommy Gomes

I,m 46 years old, live and work and play in San Diego California. I,m a 5th generation commerical fishermen, and worked all over the world on fishing boats. My fathers family came to San Diego in 1892, and we are still fishing today.

I make a scent/attractant from Sea Urchin guts called UNIGOOP, and a scent called UNIBUTTER. you can check out a pretty cool underwater video on www.unigoop.com site.

some of you might remember I posted about this a few years back, however i ran into some very personal issues in life. this product has taken 17 1st place finishes, and mulit top 10 and top 20 spots here in california and is on a roll which is pretty cool.

I like to put together my own swim baits, i dont pour any, just like to put em together. I know a few guys here in San Diego that are pretty big in the swimbiat circle, FISHTRAPS, MC SWIMBAITS, REEBS LURES, WESTERN PLASTICS, but being a member here is pretty cool. Its great to see, that even if we are miles and miles apart, we are still bonded by a tug on the line, or a blow up on a jig, pretty cool indeed.

thanks for allowing me to be a member here and i,m looking forward to helping out when and where i can....

Sorry, I have been on the site for a while mainly just reading posts and taking in all that has to be offered. Armed w/ the information everyone has given, I purchased an airbrush and painted a few crankbaits. This has all been performed at the kitchen table (much to the annoyment of my wife). Since i have a room that i have stored (piled w/ all of my hobbies and accessories) I decided that i needed a work space that i can keep everything organized. That has been my winter project. I just finished installing cabinets and an 8' workbench, w/ pegboard wall. (I will post pics soon.) The wife has been much more pleasent to be around. Now i can use my spare time in a much more productive way (actually work rather than unpack and repack to and from the kitchen table.) I fish bass tourn. around the midwest and used to be a golf professional. I extremely appreciate the information that is shared within this site, it has saved me a lot of frustration and time by not having to learn this craft w/o any idea off where to go next. I am trying to reply to the picks as I feel bad when someone has posted their accomplishments and no one has acknowledged their efforts for good or bad. That is what this is all about helping someone else learn from our mistakes. Thanks to all. ________________

As all learners to a sport i was a taker and For a long time i wouldn't give out any of MY secrets. Then finally i found the pleasure of teaching what i had learned. I think its an evolutionary process. I still give out bad advice to those who don't release bass, corbina, marlin or any fish thats too good to be caught only once. Ill be happiest when i get to share what ive learned.

G'day Black Jack and all TU members, I live in Darwin Australia, this is the first TU log on for me, I find the site quite interesting. As you are probably aware we have access to a large range of crankbait crunching sport fish like Barramundi, Treadfin salmon, Mangrove jacks and the list goes on and on.

I have a good friend that has been making his own carved crank baits (or hard bodied lures as we refer to them) for many years now, they are called "Scurvey Dog Lures" and although does not manufacture these comercially they have gained a fan base with fishos he knows and have been used all around the globe.

So although I am just getting into making my own lures I do recognise the need to share info as my good mate Wayne has shown to me, so i look forward to gleening information from this site and down the road I will pledge to part with any interesting ideas that come from our research on the water.

All the best Marty.

My name is Greg. I'm 37 and from Pennsylvania. Saw a guy in Virginia Beach hand carving duck decoys and was immediately sucked into carving as a hobby. Started a year or so ago trying hand carve fish and lures. Hoping at some point in time to make just enough cash to cover the cost of tools. Other than that it's just a hobby I hope to make last.

Thanks to all of you who provide such good information to help us new guys get started.

Hello All.....My name is Michael and i'm 51 years old....married 25 years and have 2 beautiful daughters and now a gorgous granddaughter. After surviving a massive heart attack at age 38 I decided i'd had enough of the fast paced big city lifestyle and all my wicked partying ways, and I moved my family from Tulsa, to a rural town in a very scenic area of southwest Arkansas. Now we are surrounded by the Ouachita national forest and everywhere I look is a postcard perfect picture.....I now know why they call Arkansas the "Natural state".....Moving here was the best thing I've ever done....wish i'd done it 20 years earlier.

I was introduced to fishing by my grandfather who would take us boys down to the pond during our summer vacations with them.....been addicted ever since. Once I caught a largemouth bass from a local steam I became hooked on bass fishing, but I still fish for most anything thats biting at the time. A couple of my fishin buddies and I started pouring our own jigs and spinnerbaits back then, and I even tied my share of trout flies. Somewhere in my late 20's I got involved in sprintcar racing with my brother and ended up spending ALL my spare time at race tracks or working on the race cars and got completely away from fishing.....so much so that as time went on my wife would sell off my tackle alittle at a time during her yearly garage sales, eventually leaving me with no fishing equipment at all.

With the help of a good friend that also moved here a few months back we got to talking about fishing we used to do, and we ended up purchasing an old 1968 KingFisher bassboat we happened across in the neighborhood which started our journey back into the world of angling.....Boy I tell ya what...I couldn't be happier....I had forgotten just how much I loved this sport, and I can't wait for our weekly fishin trips to nearby lakes. Although i've had to start over collecting tackle, and the much higher prices then I was used to,got me to thinking about making some of my own again....Mainly plastics for now...worms, saltcraws, swimbaits, etc....being a research fanatic I started by searching the internet for current tackle trends and supplies as well as "how to's", which led me to run across this website....it didn't take but just a few minutes to realize I needed to bookmark this place and start soakin up all the info and wisdom I could.

I've been an artist all my life and i'm now a professional airbrusher with a small shop behind my home where I do high quality custom airbrushing for the biker community mainly....I paint alot of freehand murals, skulls, dragons, flames, etc, on all types of motorcycles and helmets as well as the occasional "Other" items....While I haven't painted painted any lures yet, i'm gettin ready to try and refinish a couple of cheapo store bought crankbaits that I can't seem to catch anything on....hopefully a different color paintjob will make the difference. I've been airbrushing since the mid 70's so i've got alot of knowledge about airbrushes and various paints that I'll gladly share with any of you that have questions....so feel free to ask or email your questions to me at Airbrusher@sbcglobal.net

My name is Jared Sievert and I'm 31 years old. I live in Zeeland Michigan and have really just started to make my own baits. I've gotten decent at making musky and pike spinners which was the reason I started making my own baits due to the cost of the professional ones. I have a few blanks that I've carved but dreading painting them because I have never done it and don't want to make them look terrible. I joined tackleunderground a couple of weeks ago and have learned so much! I have added some info to posts so far but don't really have much knowledge to give yet. I hopefully will contribute more in the future. Thanks to the creators of the site and to those that share their knowledge with us.

Thanks,

Jared
