Hydro dipping

Recommended Posts

So an odd thing rolled through my YouTube feed the other day a guy dipping a guitar body to give it a swirl paint job. so I look into it and it's called "Hydro Dipping". As with anything on the internet there seems to be a number of ways to do it. Her is one way  Has anyone tried this on a lure, I could see this working in fire tiger , wonder bread, clown and maybe as a part of a makeral.

There are transfer films that work this way it would be interesting to see if there was a good silver.

Tip of the iceberg in regards to hydro dipping (water transfer printing).  Easy quick way to do things like car rims and grills, guns, bows,  etc...

I have done some of the above type things on some wood turnings.   Neat stuff for sure.

Have seen this done on saltwater lures, guy used various nail varnishes ,pearls and coloured - gave it a swirl and dipped lure, some striking patterns possible, I got hold of  various colours  to try it but not got round to it yet . I know many of you guys seem to be fond of  lady's beauty products so your good to go !  .......glider

Hi aulrich, the guy I saw doing it was on a stripers fishing forum, he found various nail varnishes effective. I would imagine these are acetone or cellulose based ? Cant find article at the minute, not tried it yet so don't know how paint, nail varnish,

and top coat compatibility would pan out. I actually went as far as acquiring a selection of suitable looking nail varnishes but never got round to trying it, mainly because I don't really have a use for this type of variegated pattern. He did produce some striking mother of pearl and marble type patterns, if i get time and can remember where I put things I can give it a shot if it helps, might save you an embarrassing   "it's for fishing lures honest " visit to the ladies department, my local pharmacists are used to me buying some strange things over the years and just nod and say' fishing stuff ' now .

Oh, I have used the "it's for fishing lures" thing before.  At the time I was on a hunt for a 3/8" hole punch for punching disks out of aluminum cans.  The ladies at the scrap booking store had a good laugh when they figured out I was looking for something and not just picking up my wife from a work shop :) , I'm too old to be shy

Ha. Aulrich  I had a look and couldn't find the stuff I bought  (I think it's been stolen ) .for the the furthering of T.U knowledge I picked up a couple of new  bottles today !  Different sales assistant, a big old guy, looked at me funny when I asked if he thought it would suit me . Anyway,I  found the original post I seen , guy used standard cheap nail varnishes, some over foil and some paint. He undercoated first with epoxy over foil or paint then epoxy over finished nail varnish dip with apparently no issues. I only picked up silver, gold and a fetching holographic and will be limited as to actual pattern ,this should be enough to see how it goes though.  Ive put a quick coat of black gloss on a blank earlier and will give it a dip in a few hours. Like I say I don't see me having a great use for it but wanted to see how it would go. Will report back later.......glider

Aulrich, I gave it a try with nail varnishes and it worked fine, done one with black under and one white under, the black looked best with metallic varnishes. Unfortunately I hadn't epoxy coated 1st  because I just wanted to see what happened and needless to say when I tried to remove varnish to have another dip I turned the lot including undercoat and and primer into a nasty sludge so no pictures . Personally I don't have a use for this type of variegated pattern ,I think it looks hideous on a lure ,but it has possibilities for say a swirly marbled pearl/metallic belly or something. There are guy's using spray paints also on youtube.  If you're going to try it I found with nail varnish you have to kind of flick it onto water surface or it can go on in thick blobs. The first colours you put down will be most prominent because you are coating lure on way down , then lift back out of clear water with no varnish on that part of surface or you will coat on top of 1st coat on way out. The varnish sort of cures on water surface into almost a sheet, much like transfer decal paper . Use enough varnish to create a sheet on surface of water that is plenty big enough to cover complete surface area of lure and then some.  Worth a mess about with and certainly eye catching, but not for me .........glider

Hi aulrich, I remember  seeing someone using testors for some sort of saltwater speed type jig .seemed to work well. I would definitely only dip a lure coated in epoxy if I was doing it again, that allows you to just clean paint off and go again till you like it. Obviously with the base colour under epoxy especially if you're  going with fluorescent. Hope you get the result your after ,cheers...... glider

That looks awsome, I love the spoons, I have yet to find a blank that I like , where did you get yours.  The two bread and butter spoons  for me are Len Thompson or Mepps Cyclops.

That 100$ can of activator is a bit of a barrier for my general cheapness, though I did see a youtube where a guy blended his own a Kiwi who could not source locally

The spoons are just good old Daredevil a customer got in eBay if I remember. There's some pretty inexpensive starter kit - search Dipstix kits. I have the big tanks and all. But I've seen some good results from the kits.
