unknown
I've been pouring spinner baits for a number of months now and I have noticed a problem when I paint them. I use powder paint and when I heat the head of the spinner bait and paint it the wire will loosen in the head of the bait, it will not happen to all of them. After it cools the wire is still loose. Is there a way to keep this from happening or will it just happen sometimes? Thanks in advance. fields
reeves
I believe you are letting your heat source heat either the wireform or the hook or both. The heat then transfers to the center of the bait causing your problem. Are you using a propane torch or heat gun? You can control the torch better because you can see the flame. Try not to let the flame hit the wire or the hook, only the lead body. Bathe the lead body in the flame by rotating it steadily till you reach your desired temperature, then dip. As hard as you try, you will occasionally still loosen one. Hope that was some help. George Reeves H&P Tackle Welch, OK
Mr B
The other thing that causes this is when the orignal head is removed from the mold. If you grasp the bait by the wire or the hook and have to wiggle it back and forth to remove it from the mold, the hook or wire will create a cavity around itself before the lead is hardened. Try letting it set a little longer in the open mold before removing it or try not to wiggle the wire or hook so much when removing the head from the mold. Just a thought. Glaucus
If there is enough room within the mold cavity to fit, bend the ?J? loop into an ?S? bend on the end of the wire form. This will really anchor the wire. A hard lead alloy (wheel weights are good) also helps to keep the wire from becoming loose.
unknown
Thanks for all the info, i guess i am getting them a little too hot, i do use a torch to heat them up. I use pliers to pull the bait from the mold, that way i will not loosen the wire from the head. I like the s form too i will give that a shot if this does not work.
