Both sides have been poor in the Premier League, combining for a staggering 39 defeats to sit 16th and 17th in the table, but both sets of supporters have overcome limited travel options to arrive in the Basque Country ready for their date with destiny.

Ange Postecoglou claimed he “always wins” a trophy in his second year in charge of clubs and has created waves of headlines in the build-up by taking a swipe at a journalist for writing that he was “teetering between hero and clown”. United arrive at the final unbeaten in Europe this term and looking to repeat the glory of 2017 in this competition over the heartache in 2021 when theu fell to Villarreal on penalties in the final.

And United have not beaten Spurs in their last six matches, with three successive losses, but Ruben Amorim’s side can boost hopes of a successful summer transfer window with victory here.

Jack Pitt-Brooke spoke to two travelling Tottenham Hotspur supporters Ben and Paul on Monday on the ferry to Bilbao to find out!

The Athletic: How are you feeling about the game?

Ben: I've been a Tottenham fan for 34 years so I know not to be optimistic. I'm trying to remain pessimistic.

Paul: I'm a little bit bolder, I've got a feeling we'll do it. The stars are aligning, I feel optimistic. We've got a better team than Manchester United.

They've got couple of key players Tottenham have to keep an eye on, like Bruno Fernandes, who's going to be key. But Tottenham are finally going to break that hoodoo. If Bologna, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, and Harry Kane can do it, Tottenham can.

The Athletic: How much would it mean to you guys to see Sonny and the lads lift the trophy on Wednesday night?

Ben: It's something we've always wanted. It's obviously something that would be incredible for my old man. He's ill back home, can't come to something like this. It'd be incredible.

Paul: I've never been to a final where we've won. To see Tottenham lift the trophy in the flesh would be amazing. And I dread to think what state I might be in, I will probably cry.

My other half always gives me stick for not crying at anything, but Tottenham might actually do that to me. So it could be quite emotional.

The two Premier League clubs have underperformed domestically this season — but victory today would bring a shiny new trophy as well as a lucrative spot in the Champions League.

United have won the Europa League once, in 2017. Tottenham have won it twice, in 1972 and 1984, back when it was called the UEFA Cup.
