    Trout Skin

I am going to attempt to use the skin of rainbow trout on a large jointed plug. There is a market that sells 14? beautifully colored, Idaho rainbow trout. These fish held most of there color. I have never attempted this but I am paining to epoxy the skin to the plug then epoxy over the skin and scales. Is there anyone with experience that can give me a few tips? Martin
  2. Jed: I only make topwater. I have not had any problem having them sink after top coat. I have used dense wood like maple without any problems. Go for it coat that plug. Martin

    Createx

I just bought some Createx. I have a few questions, does it need to be sanded between coats or sanded before the top coat is applied? The guy at the store told me to shoot it at 50 to 60 PSI, is that too high? To clean the airbrush is water sufficient? Martin
  4. Can you spray lacquer over the Kiltz or will the lacquer lift it?
  5. BasserD The lure is attached by a screw eye. I cut 5/8? dowels 41/2? long drilled a hole at the end then epoxied a stainless screw eye in it. I used 5 minute gel epoxy. The reason gel, it held the screw eye straight while waiting for it to set. The dowel is inserted in a rubber cap, which is screwed to the turning board. Martin
  6. The wheel is complete. I have about $45 bucks invested. It will accept 24 lures. Most of my stuff is jointed so I can run 12 lures, I top coat them before assembly. Will put some top coat on tomorrow and see how things work. The motor is rated for 10 pounds. Fully loaded I am at 8 ? pounds. I hope the motor holds up. It has a 3 year warrantee so I am good for a while. Martin

    Drying Wheel

Thanks kbkindle I went running around town looking for a higher RPM motor. I went by another wal mart and checked out their motors. They had a different rotisserie motor but I checked it out in the store (finding an electric outlet was tough) and it was almost 2 RPM?s. Anyway I finally bought one at Lowe?s. If I remember right it went 5.5 or 6 RPM?s. It is a little noisy but the speed is right. I am not doing the xacto knife thing. I am epoxying screw eyes in dowels. I am screwing plastic caps (caps like you would put at the bottom of a cane or table leg) to the turning board. The dowels will fit snug in the plastic caps. I?ll post a picture when I am done. Drying Wheel

Decided to build a drying wheel. I purchased a universal rotisserie at wall mart. The price was right, $19 but it is only 1 RMP. Will it work? Martin
  11. By coincidence I met the inventor of a product called ?Classic Rod Coat?. The guy lives near me. He gave me 32 ounces of his heavy bond and 8 ounces of his light bond. He said it should work well as a topcoat on lures. Also he gave me a suggestion. His idea was to use color preserver as a sealer. I just happen to have a quart of water base flex coat color preserver in the garage. Has anyone used the Classic Rod Coat on top or color preserver as a sealer? Just curious. My next try will be Skeeter?s polyurethane idea but I will keep all options open. Martin
  12. Skeeter: Thank you very much for the info. My next run of lures will be done with your method. The reason I was concerned about sealing the wood is, I am hard on a lure (hitting rock). Most lures I build are jointed trout or rats. I toss soft plastic swimbaits (for bass) in the winter but summer I turn into a top water freak. I will toss large top water plugs all day, and I fish 4 to 6 days a week, so I beat up a lot of lures. Martin
  13. Skeeter: Simple sounds good to me. Will the polyurethane seal the wood? Is it overkill to dip the plug in polyurethane. Thanks Martin
  14. I have browsed this site for a year and have used many of your ideas. Thank you folks for your great ideas and knowledge. As a hobbyist I been building wood baits for a year. I am very satisfied with the plugs I have built, I have caught double digit on my home built stuff. I have one frustrating problem. I pour my heart into making baits only to watch the paint or finish come off after a few hours of fishing. The paint or finish does not wear off it come off in sheets. The products I have used are: Sanding lacquer, lacquer & plastic cups. Plasti-Kote spot filler & primer House of color lacquer paint, Sherwin Williams auto paint, Plasti-Kote classic lacquer, Tamiya color. Devcon 2 ton, Aristocrat, Nu-luster, Spar polyurethane. Any ideas where I am going wrong? Martin
