Hi Robert English is better than some locals I know. Thank you for the information. I will try it sometime. Very nice baits! Very clean lines. Vic
  3. Hi Patrick Nice work! Carving takes time but fun. I just wanted to add this bit on cutting the lip slot. If you need a large one, a table saw does a nice job. One cut and your done. i use a wood clamp to hold my work while cutting. The clamp will need app 1/4 inch of padding to keep from maring your work. I took a foam place matt like one finds at hobby lobby for kids to decorate their own dinner mat to make mine. Cutting and glueing together until thick enough to protect the work. I slide the piece into the blade off the top guide rail. I also added a wedge between rail and blade for support. I can adjust the angle of the slot by simply moving the rail closer and farther away form the blade. Once you find the position and angle just mark the top of the saw and you can go back to it again and again. If you can cut before shaping, great, if not then this works pretty good. Vic

I like the paint and the curved bill. Do you get more depth with the curved bill? Those bright yellows should do well in dingy water and with smallmouth bass. Vic
  5. Hi KIngFisher I am including a link to a Picture of a Doll top secret. http://www.etsy.com/listing/76567126/vintage-doll-top-secret-lure Same bill and shape as yours. The top secret was a fish catching shape. I hope you do well with it. Vic

Thanks. That part of the design I actually borrowed from the one from the 1920s. They had two hooks coming from one point. I like my design better. Thru wire and more hook/claw seperation. Vic
  7. The shape looks just like a Boots Anderson Tn shad. He called this shape Top Secret. Going all the way back to the 60's. When he was selling his lures to local fisherman, this is the one fisherman kept coming back for. The shape was so good infact he sold it to the Doll lure company. The name of the lure was Top Secret.
  8. Sound Advice Kelly. Only reason I disconnected my light was because it attracted insects. Often I work at night in an exterior gargage with door open. Maybe this winter when I move things indoors I will turn the light back on. After looking for cheap lure turner motors on ebay that met my specs, I realized a microwave would be great. I started my search for a free broken one with a good turntable. As luck would have it in two days time I had my free microwave from work. It took longer to get the approval to take home than to convert. I think in about 30minutes I was turning lures. Hardest part was finding center on top of box for the upper shaft( bolt). I see them all the time going out with the trash. That is alot of good turners going to waste. Vic
  9. Thank you Dave. Your work has not gone in vein. I for one now know considerable more about the lips I am gluing to baits. And have a much better idea which bill to use on a lure depending on intended use. Thank you........Vic
  10. Thanks Dave The overlay really gives clarity. You may want to try braided line to help feel the lures action when tank testing. Braided is way more sensitive. Vic
  11. Dave Great work Dave. Thanks you for sharing. I love data. Are sample A's numbers correct? Visually the square bill looks to have more surface area.
  12. I was wondering can you feel any difference? Say when the lures are pulled thru the tank separately. One at a time. The article talks about one hitting harder on the turns than the other creating more vibration. I can feel a difference between the round and coffin bills. Might be hard to see but easy to feel on the end of a rod. This difference is more pronounced the faster it is retrieved. Vic
  13. [ Here is a pic of turner. I am going to add a round piece of wood with holes in it where the platter normally goes. One can then place several dow rods with lures on them in the holes holes.
  14. Hi Dave It is good to think. Here is photo of the the two lures. The coffin is the first and only one I have made but I liked how it swam. Very smooth wiggle. Very fish like. You can truly make one any way you like. This one was done hastily but effective. The coffin I made is appx. 10mm widw at tip, 15mm wide at base, short sides are 15mm in length, the long sides are 25mm in length. Total bill length is 40mm appx. and 25 mm at widest point. Center of tie point is 25mm from leading edge of bill.
  15. Yep its not a 9v so dont stick your tong to it That is a good idea about the timer disconnect the ray gun and your good to go. [/quote This one was over 1200v and the size of a small army canteen. Exaggarting a bit on size but I would not want to be the dummy load on the other end of it.

Thanks . I have thought about tack eyes painted different colors. The new fiber optic eyes I have seen some using here really have my attention too. I really like mixing the old with the new. This is an old design going back to the 1920's at least with the lexan lip giving it a new look. Little by little I hope to try them all.
  17. Hi Ben Not really sure about the mudbug. How deep do they go? I have tried making some deep diving square bills without success. Then I found this so i stopped trying. My lure is similar to a mudbug but the size and length and angle and tie position of bill would not make go deeper than four feet. The mud bug has a narrower and thinner bill than mine. This may help it get deeper. With the bill in the horizontal position and location of line tie the mudbug is designed to go deep. How deep? I would love to get my lure to 10 feet.
  18. Hello everyone just wanted to share an idea I am now using. After searching for a cheap lure turner, I finally have one. I took an old microwave with a working turntable and converted it to a lure turner . Very easy and cheap. It also makes a nice dust free environment for the lures to dry in. Plus it has a built in timer. Just disconnected everything except timer and turntable. Lay it on it's side and install something to attach lures. Caution microwaves have a very large capacitor high voltage known to kill. Be careful!!!
  19. Hi Vodkaman Here is a couple links to articles on this subject. They are insightful. http://www.conservationcafe.com/Fishing/article_detail.asp?iArticleID=5720 http://www.conservationcafe.com/Fishing/article_detail.asp?iArticleID=5733 I only mention coffin bill because I recently made two lures nearly identical except two things bill and paint. One was round and the other coffin. To my surprise the coffin ran smoother with very nice tight wiggle. The kids painted their own bait and chose the bill design. Bodies, weight and hooks were same. It was my first coffin bill. I will be making more.
  20. Like the video work. Love the test tank. The round bill looks a bit smoother to me. Have you tried a coffin bill?

This is a Boots Anderson handmade balsa bait. I believe it was called a creek miner. I hope you enjoy this masterpiece by a master.
