  1. A local machine shop should be able to help you out, if its on the beginning of the thread and you can see the burr maybe try going with a drill bit a few thousands larger than the hole and just drill the first thread out, its small stuff to work with and wont take much to ruin it all togeather so if you dont have the tools and skills needed take it to someone that does good luck with it
  2. Do you want to make vacuum formed stencils or just flat stencils? I have used those plastic folders I get them at the dollar store in a pack of assorted colors and use my modified wood burner or exacto knife to cut them out, if your looking to vacuum form stencils this is what I have been doing, I use the plastic from packages that have something vacuum sealed in it already, kids toys are a great source, I got some good size pieces from some dolls that my grandaughter got for xmas you dont need a very big piece to make a lure stencil and the plastic is free all you have to do is cut them out now I find myself looking at people's garbage to see if there is any in their garbage that I can use, I use clay to make the molds to hold the lure 1/2 way on both sides when vacuum forming the stencils and it works fine once you do a few and get used to how hot to get the plastic is the hardest part once you get that figured out its a breeze to make them having a helper doesnt hurt either good luck
  3. Sounds interesting, I would have to think it would be very thick and dry time may be to fast and start drying before your done applying it and also cost but hey you wont know if you dont try it who knows it just may be the new hot item for the next few months
  4. Have you looked for a source locally, you may be surprised but sometimes things are right under your nose, look for a packaging company, they may even have other options like a box with a clear front, like name brand lures are packaged, with the equipment today making a order of a thousand pieces is no big deal for what your paying now you may be able to get a better looking package for the same money
  5. What are you using to hack on them, I use a dremel tool with a carbide bit and I have to sand some spots to smooth it out, I use a black marker to draw the design on the plastic then cut it out with the dremel, if you are cutting stencils on a flat surface you could get a stencil cutter its just like a soldering gun or wood burner but with a different tip made for cutting stencils out on plastic if you take your time you can do it, I saved some plastic from Christmas gifts it should work well I ended up with enough to make a few stencils but everything is on hold until after the holidays are over and im not working 60 + hours a week
  6. I use a wood burning pen to cut stencils in plastic, I use an arrow tip a practice tip that I modified and it works real good, I found it is better to go a little faster when cutting then to melt to much away, I made a box with a glass top and a light Inside for cutting stencils and tracing, if your tip is burning or melting to fast try to find something heavier so it takes more heat and wont melt the plastic as fast, an arrow tip screwed right into my wood burning pen and it works real good
  7. X3 on the hobby lobby coupon, I get all my paints there, the best advice anyone can give someone just starting out with airbrushing is to read some about it first then buy a decent airbrush and practice practice practice, I started with making stencils out of thin plastic, I used folders used for paper binders you can get them at the dollar store, I watched a lot of YouTube videos made some stencils and went from there learning how to detail a stencil, skulls and dragons are real good to start with then lean how to detail them, then I tryed some flames and depending on the style they can be quite challenging after many many hours I finally got the techniques down and finally moved on to the lures remember less is more when painting and I prefer translucent paints mostly, if you painting wood bodys wet them a little to get the grain to stand up then sand with fine sandpaper make sure there nice and smooth then paint them with some good white paint to seal them up and a base coat the white will make your colors bright and pop opposed to a dark base coat, also get an air pressure adjustment valve that will be in arms reach in your painting area once you get going on painting you will see why it is a great tool to have, I hope this helps you getting started watch lots of YouTube videos and you will get it and its nice to be able to paint more than just lures I have been asked to do a buddys motorcycle with skulls and flames and a pickup truck
  8. Thanks for the info I'll just stick to the epoxy, I guess it would work on some things like a popper or a spoon
  9. I know this may have been asked before, but has anyone ever tryed using water based poly that is used on hardwood floors?? and if you have did it hold up or would it be a waate of money, I would have to think it may work but is price a major factor? Thanks in advance for any info
  10. Full spectrum laser is one I read the most on and it seems some people have good and bad luck with them, like is said though it could be operator error, forgetting to turn the water pump on or the air compressor, I would be willing to give one a try now dont forget these are hobby models so if you plan to run it alot it may just wear out quicker, but it would be great for cutting lips once you got the speed dialed in
  11. EBay and Amazon, also do a Google search also thats where I started looking first, I read a lot of reviews on a few different models and the conclusion is thats its a crap shoot with any of them, also I think a lot of the problems could be operator error, check them out and post what you think after reading some reviews on a few models
  12. I just like to be able to make all the parts myself when I can and when I do get a press I wouldn't mind selling some to offset the cost of the press and dies, I have been looking at other ways to do it and a laser cutter is one cool machine, you can cut lexan do engraving and it runs just liks you would print on your computer simple and easy to use I seen one for under $800.00 and a few others up to $2700.00 yea its a big investment but if you can make enough things to pay it off why not if things went well with sales I would stick with it who knows it may just grow from there
  13. Possibly a crankbait lip ??? but it looks to be a little long but ya never know, it could have been home made to
  14. I was just interested in making my own, but hey if theres a market for them why not sell some, I didnt really think there would be to many people looking to buy because most guys are either making there own or already have a sourse for getting them
  15. Same here and thats a lot of the same lure, I was wondering if maybe they would let you choose a few different ones as long as you buy the 250 pcs, if they dont do that then the next best thing would be to find a few guys to go in on a few different types and split them up
  16. My thoughts exactly, thats why the punch press was the first thing to come to my mind, sooner or later I will get one, I can make more than just lips with it also, I dont plan to just make crankbait lips with it thats for sure I would have to much wrapped up in it for it only to be used for one thing
  17. It is nice to see a guy living his dream, and making lures with just 3 guys is cool to, I someday hope to be doing the same, I hope I can get close to the price he gets for his lures
  18. I have machine shop skills to do it, my grandfather was a tool and die maker and I have all his tools just not the machinery to do it, I have a friend that has the machinery but it was his grandfather's and it hasnt been used in years and none of it is wired up to use at the moment, I have been trying to get him to sell the equipment to me but he seems to be somewhat attached to it with it being his grandfather's I guess I have another friend that works at a machine shop but they dont do much of that kind of work and they are always swamped with contract deadline work so theres no time to play there but im not giving up on trying to buy some equipment for the right price
  19. A press was the first thing that came to my mind but right now having the cash to invest in that type of equipment is out of the question for now, and im not sure how they would come out being punched out, will the edges be smooth or would I have to clean them up on a sander? If I were to get a press I could use it to make other things as well and I know where I can most likely get one, its very old but I see it work and have used it myself before, the company is going to be upgrading to a newer press and the old will most likely be up for sale so I do plan on trying to buy it when the time comes then it would just be a matter of getting some dies made up, that may be pricey unless I find a way to cobble them myself
  20. I have made jigs for a number of things over the years, it wont be hard to do at all, I want to not have to do any trimming on a saw, aside from my last cut that will free the lips from the lexan sheets, I will be using a bit with the bearing on the bottom same as a bit you would use for trimming formica on counter tops, now I just have to find a supplier for the lexan and see how much its going to cost, I have bought some years ago for a race car I used to run and it was some very pricey stuff back then but it was way thicker than what I need now so maybe it wont be to bad, plexiglass would work also but it make break in colder weather thats the reason for going with the lexan
  21. I found a little info but it was using a band saw, what I have in mind is to make a jig to cut multiple lips at one time, it would be similar to a dove tail router jig, lexan is tough stuff so im going to give it a try I think it will work its going to take some time to get the jig made so I dont see me getting it done untill after the holidays
  22. I tryed the search bar and nothing comes up, maybe it was to long ago?
  23. Has anyone ever tryed useing a router with a jig to cut out crankbait lips, I want to try stacking some lexan and using a router with a bearing to follow a template of the lip to cut them out but im just worried the bit may burn or melt it any advice for a rookie
  24. I seen some casting kits at hobby lobby but they didnt have the casting materials for purchase I would have to buy a kit and they are small I dont think I would be able to make very many lures from it, I guess im going to have to mail order some
  25. Thanks for the info, sinking like a stone is not What im looking for but at least I got to find out how it is without having to buy the stuff and try it for myself only to have wasted time and money thanks again
